If the Tea Party movement, with its fanatic libertarianism and selfish individualism, were to gain any measure of power, it would wreak havoc on the economy (imagine America without a Federal Reserve System), shred the social safety net, and undermine what exists of the great American community. So I am not suggesting, as Christopher Caldwell did in the Financial Times, that “the Tea Party has no explicit program beyond giving the Republican party some spine and integrity.” That’s errant nonsense unless you believe that the Republican Party really wants to be an extremist movement, but is being prevented from realizing its true nature. What I am suggesting is that it’s very possible to believe that the Tea Party is not the latest manifestation of the Ku Klux Klan or White Citizens’ Councils—while still believing that it is a terrible menace, nonetheless.

As if we've been running things for 100 years? Secondly, what is this "great American community" he speaks of? All I can see are entrenched, parasitic special interests for miles and miles. Uh Bueller?

The racist attack is so old. The worst thing that anyone in the movement could do is try to pander to those that attack you. Submission is seen as weakness, inviting further attacks.

haha thanks for the post AuH20. I needed a good laugh tonight. It's amazing that people like that still exist. The good news is, when the economy and dollar collapse, there will be no need for people like John B. Judis in the USA.

Just when I thought TNR was slightly sane, I found this gem on the side:

"Ron Paul is not the plain-speaking antiwar activist his supporters believe they are backing--but rather a member in good standing of some of the oldest and ugliest traditions in American politics."

Wow, this is horrible, think we should start supporting Obama?

i definitely think a lot of people in the tea party movement discriminate against groups of people in the united states. look at homosexuals, immigrants, and muslims. the tea party screams discriminatory and even if they are a small part, they reflect poorly on the movement of party as a whole.
