Liberty Group To Hold Petition Rallies - Healthcare Freedom Act (http://www.theeveningleader.com/content/view/190928/1/)

The Evening Leader
28 May 2010

ST. MARYS — A local organization is teaming up with a statewide group to help place a Constitutional amendment on the November ballot. Members of the Grand Lake St. Marys John Birch Society (http://www.jbs.org/) recently linked up with the Ohio Project to help gather signatures in the effort to place an amendment on the ballot regarding the recently passed health care bill. According to the Project Ohio website, the amendment would provide Ohioans the freedom to choose their health care participation.

To help gather signatures, members of the local John Birch Society chapter are holding two petition signings Sunday. One will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the WeldTec parking lot at the intersection of Ohio 703 and 364. The second will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the parking lot at the intersection of Ohio 66 and 274 in New Bremen.

“We need 402,275 signatures by June 28,” co-organizer Bob McCune said.
McCune, along with co-organizer Bob Valentine, said the group plans to obtain as many signatures as possible in Auglaize County. The group will canvass St. Marys, New Knoxville, New Bremen and Minster until the deadline.

“We feel this is probably the most important event that we will have this entire year,” Valentine said of the signature drive. “Our most important project of the year is to get Auglaize County’s share of the 402,000-plus signatures in order to get this issue on the November ballot as an amendment to the Ohio Constitution.”
Valentine said each location will have a canopy where residents can sign the petition. The locations, Valentine said, also will provide easy access for motorists.
“We expect to have a person out there with a sign that will be directing traffic into the parking area so they can leave by the next exit,” Valentine said.

The pair said planning the event on Memorial Day was no accident.

“This is quite significant as far as I am concerned because Memorial Day weekend honors the soldiers who have given their lives for the freedoms that we enjoy,” Valentine said. “This event and our project, as well as our organization, is based on those same freedoms.”

Valentine said Auglaize County’s portion of the signatures is 700. However the group already surpassed that figure.

“I’d like to see 7,000 or more,” Valentine said. “We hope to help offset some of those counties which I feel will show deficits.”

While canvassing, Valentine said group members also came across other residents carrying petitions on the matter.

“We have had maybe three or four instances in the past week and a half of coming across people, not only in St. Marys, but in New Knoxville, New Bremen and Minster,” Valentine said. “We would invite any of these people to contact us so that we can better coordinate our efforts and not have cross-canvassing.”

The Ohio Project Surpasses 150,000 Signatures (http://www.ohiolibertycouncil.org/?p=2199)

Ohio Liberty Council (http://www.ohiolibertycouncil.org)
Jul 9, 2010

For decades in Ohio, out of state special interests or corporate interests have been spending millions of dollars to pay workers to gather signatures in order to put issues on the ballot. The Ohio Project was conceived as an experiment to see if a true grass roots volunteer workforce could also get issues on the ballot. But not just any issues. We are talking about issues that limit government, preserve freedom, and protect your individual rights as the Ohio Constitution was meant to do!

Of course there was always a question if people would respond. The answer to that question is a resounding YES! We are elated to report that just 2 months after we received our first signature this ALL VOLUNTEER workforce has gathered over 150,000 signatures for the Health Care Freedom Amendment (http://theohioproject.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=97&Itemid=157), and most of those signatures have been gathered in the last 4 weeks! This is an unprecedented accomplishment in Ohio political history.

The top 5 counties in terms of total number of signatures gathered are:

Franklin Co – 11,200
Hamilton Co – 9,560
Medina Co – 6,311
Fairfield Co – 5,236
Clermont Co – 5,136

The top 5 counties in terms of total signatures gathered as a percentage of voters that voted in the last gubernatorial election are:

Mercer Co – 20.4%
Van Wert Co – 18.9%
Auglaize Co – 17.5%
Fayette Co – 17.3%
Shelby Co – 16.5%

A total of 35 counties have an amount of signatures that surpasses 5% of the number of votes in the last gubernatorial election. 44 counties must meet or exceed this 5% requirement as set forth by the Ohio Secretary of State (http://www.sos.state.oh.us/SOS/elections/issues/initiatedamendment.aspx) as part of the requirements to get an issue on the ballot.

Congratulations to the individuals in these counties and all dedicated individuals in other counties for an outstanding effort! You are participating in making history. The dedication you have shown by turning frustration with Washington into real action is inspiring. But, of course, our work is not done. It is important to keep on a steady and consistent course until we are done. Our goal of getting the Health Care Freedom Amendment on the 2011 ballot has not changed (http://www.theohioproject.com/media/docs/2010-06-20_StateOfTheOhioProject.html). As long as we continue at this pace, we will have our signatures by November. Keep it up – and keep talking to people about the project. The more people circulating petitions (http://theohioproject.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=47&Itemid=54), the easier the job is for everyone!
