WASHINGTON — US National Guard troops being sent to the Mexican border will be used to stem the flow of guns and drugs across the frontier and not to enforce US immigration laws, the State Department said Wednesday.

The clarification came after the Mexican government urged Washington not to use the additional troops to go after illegal immigrants.

President Barack Obama on Tuesday authorized the deployment of up to 1,200 additional troops to border areas but State Department spokesman Philip Crowley told reporters, "It's not about immigration."

He said the move was "fully consistent with our efforts to do our part to stem, you know, violence, to interdict the flow of dangerous people and dangerous goods -- drugs, guns, people."

He said the extra troops would be used to free up civilians engaged in support functions so that law enforcement personnel can be increased along the 2,000-mile-long (3,200 kilometer) border.

"not to enforce US immigration laws"

No, heaven forbid the government does what it's suppose to do for once. The Obama administration is sending them to kiss Calderon's ass.

So what? The federal government just isn't going to enforce immigration policy anymore, except on immigrants that might vote Republican?

So, they aren't denying what their agenda is anymore. Isn't this a declaration of war on the sovereignty of the US?

Funny, you aren't alone in that assessment. I thought the same thing!

If it isn't it's outright contempt.

They will probably just keep guns from the US out of Mexico, thereby just securing the Mexican side of the border.

Yea, I call bullshit on that. If anything, the Guardsmen will be used to make sure the shipments of drugs owned by certain interests are allowed to safely pass through while they squash those who won't pay for 'protection'. It'll be the same thing as the poppy crop in Afghanistan.

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama's Democratic allies in the Senate have repelled a move by presidential rival John McCain to send an additional 6,000 National Guard troops to the U.S-Mexico border.

The Arizona Republican says the security situation along the order has deteriorated so badly that 3,000 guard troops are needed just to help protect his state. But McCain failed to muster the required 60 votes for his plan as the Senate continued debate on an a war funding bill.

Obama on Tuesday promised to send 1,200 Guard troops to the border to support efforts to block drug trafficking and temporarily supplement Border Patrol agents until more agents can be trained.

Former President George W. Bush sent thousands of Guard troops to the border in 2006.

So the feds are mobilizing Guards units in order to send them to the southern border and have them face north. Will they be surprised when ambushed from the other side?

I really don't think our government cares if guns leave the U.S.
