Libertarian Party Founder David Nolan running for US Senate in Arizona against John McCain
May 26th, 2010 · 8 Comments

LP FOUNDER TAKES ON TOP REPUBLICAN IN AZ SENATE RACE

After losing the 2008 race for President, Sen. John McCain returned to Arizona to seek re-election.. His record in the Senate includes support for Bush’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, bipartisan backing for President Clinton’s bombing of Yugoslavia, a vote for the Patriot Act and sponsorship of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act, the infamous McCain-Feingold bill.

On some issues, Sen. McCain has been reliably conservative, voting against the Prescription Drug benefit under Bush, and against healthcare “reform” under President Obama.

He has voted along with other Republicans to expand the federal role in the war on drugs, and he voted for the No Child Left Behind act, expanding the federal role in education.

In 2008 Sen. McCain lobbied Republicans in Congress to support President Bush’s bailout of the banks, as then Sen. Obama lobbied Democrats to back the bailout.

The Libertarian Party was formed in 1971 in response to the imposition of government controls on wages and prices by President Richard Nixon. Dave Nolan decided that the Republican Party was no longer an effective means to fight for limited government, and began holding meetings in his living room.

This year, Dave Nolan is challenging another big government Republican. Dave Nolan is seeking the Libertarian nomination for U.S. Senate tochallenge Sen.John McCain.

Dave Nolan intends to stress the economic issues in his campaign, pushing for honest money, and end to the Federal Reserve system, and his opposition to bail-outs of banks and big business. He will also campaign to restore civil liberties, whether the issue is the Patriot Act, or the War on Drugs, and for a non-interventionist foreign policy.

The Nolan for Senate campaign will be a high profile advertisement for The Libertarian Party as an alternative for over-taxed, over-regulated Americans. After 8 years of Bush league statism under Republican auspices, the Democrats have shown in less than two years their own commitment to even bigger government.

I wish him absolutely the best of luck, but his chances might have been better if he had challenged McCain as a Republican. As it is now, I fear David won't pick up very many votes, since people are still caught up in the "wasted vote" mindset when it comes to the LP.
