The principal driving factor that has created an illegal-immigration problem in the United States is our metamorphosis from a free-market economy to a cradle-to-boardroom-to-grave welfare state.

Those who violate our immigration laws are rewarded with free food, free health care and free education, coupled with under-the-table paychecks with no tax deductions. Of course, there is no such thing as a free lunch, and someone has to pay the bill. If you pay taxes, that means you are paying the bill. If you are paying the bill and you are upset with this mess, you have a right to be upset.

It is worth noting that the Republicans are every bit as responsible for this disaster as the Democrats. In fact, the last major amnesty push in 2007 was lead by by Arizona Sen. John McCain and strongly supported by President George W. Bush. Republicans have likewise led the charge over and over again to promote the welfare state under the guise of “compassionate conservatism” or some other other anti-constitutional, anti-free-market sleight of hand.

Remember the mess that was the Bob Taft administration? In terms of reckless spending, Taft makes Gov. Ted Strickland look like an amateur.

The new law passed in Arizona is a knee-jerk reaction to the failure of the federal government to do one of the key jobs it is actually tasked to do, namely, to protect the states from invasion per Article IV, Section 4, of the Constitution. The solution is overly Draconian and not nearly as good as the solution passed by Oklahoma.

The law passed in Oklahoma got to the root of the problem by simply requiring proof of legal residency to enroll in school and get health care, state aid, a driver’s license, etc. After the Oklahoma law passed, most of the illegal immigrant population self-deported themselves out of the state. This is the example that Ohio should follow.

In history, we learn that the Romans made a huge, civilization-killing mistake by granting a general amnesty in 376 A.D. All the same arguments we hear today were used then: that there were jobs that Romans did not want to do, that more people were needed to fill the ranks of the military, etc.

The end result was the sacking and burning of Rome. If we continue to follow the destructive policies put forward by the Republicans and Democrats, our republic, our very way of life, likewise will end. Let us learn from history, not repeat the mistakes.
