"I think a lot of us in the Republican Party would like to see Rand Paul and his voting and how he will vote in the U.S. Senate [become] the position of the Republican Party," Bunning said, in a rare exchange with reporters outside the Senate chamber. "

Bunning ... blamed the "far left" editorial board of the Louisville Courier-Journal for the controversy that has flared over Paul's statements that he was concerned about the 1964 Civil Rights Act's regulation of private businesses.

But Bunning didn't endorse Paul's view and said he doesn't have any concerns with the 46-year-old Civil Rights law.

Bunning said it would be up to the GOP Conference on whether McConnell should remain as Republican leader but that it is a moot point because McConnell claims he has the votes to do so.

"According to him he has the votes to be reelected," said Bunning, the 77-year-old former Major League Baseball pitcher, who is known for his erratic behavior in the Senate. "You're asking a hypothetical question that doesn't deserve an answer."
