SC Dems Demand Answers: Does Jim DeMint Oppose the Civil Rights Act?

DeMint-Endorsed Candidate Comes Out Against Desegregation

Columbia, SC- This morning South Carolina Democrats demanded answers from Senator Jim DeMint after a candidate he endorsed in the U.S. Senate race in Kentucky, Rand Paul, came out in opposition to the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Paul, who had told the Louisville Courier-Journal that he believed that the government lacked the authority to end segregation in private businesses, doubled down on his radical claims last night on MSNBC.

Paul, who also opposes the Americans With Disabilities Act, was asked if he supported desegregating lunch counters and he answered, "Does the owner of the restaurant own his restaurant? Or does the government own his restaurant?"

South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Carol Fowler called for DeMint to end his silence on Paul's extreme positions. "Mr. DeMint and his friends talk a lot about freedom. Apparently Mr. Paul wants to be free to go back to the days when nearly a third of South Carolinians couldn't eat in public restaurants.

"Jim DeMint needs to stand up now and make clear that he does not stand with his pal on the Civil Rights Act, unless he actually agrees with such a divisive and discredited ideology. With a key political ally essentially seeking to relegate 28 percent of his constituents to second-class citizen status, it's abhorrent that Jim DeMint is remaining silent," said Fowler.

We're just getting started, folks.

don't you just love the byline? "Demint sponsored candidate comes out against Desegration."

More goodies!:

hxxp://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2010/5/20/868232/-DeMint-Must-Renounce-Rand-Paul

I am Vic Rawl, and I'm running against Jim DeMint for the US Senate in South Carolina.

I had planned to writing a different diary today to introduce myself to the Kos community - a diary that talked about why I'm running, why the race is important, and how we're going to win.

Then Rand Paul went on Rachel Maddow, and I had to respond. I promise you all a real introductory diary in a day or two.

Ten minutes ago, I issued the following statement:

"The comments of Senate hopeful and DeMint protégé Rand Paul on national television are reprehensible. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibiting private businesses from discriminating against people because of their color is enshrined in law and practice, and its passage was one of the brightest moments in American history.

"Dr. Paul said that the question of whether the Constitution prohibits race discrimination is ‘an abstract, obscure discussion from the 1960s.’ But to millions of South Carolinians, it is far from that. While Paul said he abhors racism, doing so without full-throated support of the laws that brought equality is itself an abstraction.

"My opponent, Jim DeMint has been a prominent and vocal supporter of Rand Paul. I directly call on Sen. DeMint to categorically reject Rand Paul’s vision of a return to widespread discrimination. Withdrawing his endorsement of Dr. Paul would be the appropriate way to do so."

I think it's high time to make Jim DeMint accountable in his role as the spiritual Godfather of the fringe of the Tea Party movement, of which Dr. Paul is a member.

Listen, I think I understand a little bit why Tea Party folks are angry. There's plenty to be mad about. But one of the things we hope to do in our campaign is to show angry people who they should really be mad at: demagogues like Jim DeMint who block every attempt to make things better in our country.

As I said above, I promise you all a fuller discussion of our campaign in the next few days. In the meantime, if you'd like to learn more, you can visit our website at http://vicrawl.com

Thank you all, and I look forward to your comments.

I think most everyone, black, white and in between is getting tired of the political correct bullshit. Yes the media will try to destroy Rand over this, but I think if this is where the left wants to take the discussion, Rand should stick to his guns and make no apologies.

They truly have nothing else. Their entire command and control economy lies in ruins. They have nothing left to give away to uninformed voters.

Rand should just make this his issue! he should run on protecting private businesses so they can deny customers based on race!! sounds like a solid winning issue to me( sarcasm)

What's the expression? "Tempest in a teapot"? This is just some early mud-slinging by the left.

You have to step back and look at this properly - this attack is exactly on cue and no-one wil care in a week or two's time. National affairs will continue to make the headlines over the coming weeks and months and the candidates will discuss what they would do in those situations.

Discussing the issues = Rand win.

Only those paid to be outraged by anything conservative/libertarian, such as the Daily Kos, Huffington Post, Media Matters and opposition staffers, will pursue these trivialities. Real people in Kentucky care about real problems, like healthcare, taxes, government debt and national defence.

Now we are seeing exactly how liberal the liberal news media can be. This is going to be a fight between big government socialists vs limited government patriots. Don't go on the defensive, let's all stand up for what we believe in. We believe in human rights for all not civil rights for a few.

I owned a restaurant/bar...I reserved the right to refuse service to ANYONE. And sometimes had people leave for various reasons (not race related though).

I think the people that are going to vote can look through this divisive "red herring".

Rand only had about 45 minutes of sleep that day and not much more than that the previous day. Cut him some would ya?
