Irish drug traffickers win another battle in the war on drugs. Head shops in Ireland will be banned from selling legal highs.

Over the last several months head shops around the country have been petrolled bomb by guess who? Yep, drug dealers.

That's real sad! :( I live in Ireland and I've always appreciated that they make a difference between LSD and drugs with much weaker effect :( I'm not a drug user myself, but this is pathetic. What signals are they sending now?

The ban makes it illegal to buy or sell mephadrone, spice products and substances which mimic cannabis, cocaine and ecstasy.

Then why the hell don't they ban pharmaceuticals

Maybe it's time, though, to ease up a bit on the outrage. Last week's arson attack on a head shop in Balbriggan is only the latest of a series of unpleasant incidents which have taken place around the country. A couple of weeks ago, there was a petrol-bomb attack on the premises of a shop in Dundalk. Gardai carried out a controlled explosion on a device left outside a further shop in Letterkenny. There have been pipe-bomb attacks in Athlone, and arson in Capel Street. There are now more than 70 head shops around the country, and there can't be a single one which has not had to deal with repeated incidents of low-level vandalism or more serious criminal damage. Someone is going to get killed if this continues. It's simply a matter of time. And you don't have to be a fan of head shops to find that disturbing.

A member of staff at the Nirvana store said Mr Bellamy does not wish to speak to the press. Mr Bellamy previously blamed media hysteria and rural anti-head shop protesters, but gardai suspect that criminals, in conjunction with dissident republicans, are behind a recent spate of attacks here and in the North.

Gardai confirm that cocaine supplied by organised criminals in the city usually has purity levels of just 10 per cent or less by the time it has passed through the chain of suppliers. White powder containing no drug has also been sold. However, the legal drugs are of consistent quality. My highlight.
