One obnoxious moronic kid in a wifebeater, who is obviously too big for his britches, smacked a flag that was being waved out a car window. Other students in the video (I'm assuming they're students from the video title) did not seem so excited by the flag-batting or the confrontation at all.

One really obnoxious woman parading around gesturing at people was also present.

There is also the police officer who showed up... he was incredibly helpful. :rolleyes:

I wasn't aware sticking the flag out the window and poking at people was proper flag etiquette, but maybe I'm old-fashioned.

From there the video goes on into the typical La Raza inspired bullshit rally. It looks like a handy excuse for ignorant kids to miss some class, and for police to get some sun.

Nah. Cinco de Mayo is another "excuse holiday." Do most people do anything special for Veterans' Day? Do most people really go all-out on Columbus Day (a lot of people still have the day off)? Not like we do other sports, but interest does peak when World Cup time comes around. It's a novelty similar to the Olympics. My club team (Vardar III) won a national championship back in '98 in the 16-yr old category, though I never made it onto the national team the US puts up for the Cup. While I know plenty of people that could give a crap about soccer, it's the appreciation of the dynamics of that level of the game which draws attention to the World Cup.

I always wondered if part of the hostility wasn't because the Americans are now very competitive with Mexico in soccer.

Thirty years ago, Mexico was the dominant soccer power in CONCACAF (N. American, Central America, and the Caribbean), but now the USA is as good, if not better.

It was one of the few things that Mexico used to be much better at than the USA, and now they don't even have that.

Well said. The only way I get any interest from my amigos is to show them the money. I just point out that when national teams play at that level their alot on money on the field. For instance like a Argintina vs Spain game could garner about 1BILLION US on the field in player contract. That usually gets people interested.

There wasn't any evidence the people waving the flag initiated aggression. They got their flag and got back in their truck. It did not appear the camera operator was affiliated with the people in the truck.

If it is not a crime to wave a Mexican flag and express sentiment it is sure as hell not a crime to do the same thing waving an American one.

American football came from Rugby football.

BTW, since both "soccer," and "football" are English terms (United Kingdom) to describe the original sport, either is appropriate, though it will likely confuse most Americans.

"Soccer" was originally a shortened version of "association football." Kind of a strange way to shorten association football, but that's what the Brits did.

While modern American football doesn't look much like it's predecessor, Rugby football, as someone who played both sports I always found the derivation of some of the "American football" terms interesting. We have a "touchdown" because in Rugby, when you score a try, you had to touch the ball down to the ground - something they also did in the early days of American football (none of this "crossing the plane" BS where the player just has to wave the ball somewhere near the line). Line of scrimmage came from the scrummage line.
