Reactions to the word "libertarian" are evenly divided -- 38% positive, 37% negative. On balance, Republicans view "libertarian" negatively, Democrats are divided, while independents have a positive impression of the term. "Militia" elicits the most negative reaction of the nine terms tested: Just 21% have a positive reaction compared with 65% who have a negative response.

Well, this sorta falls in line with DJloti's post a few days back when he was suggesting the dropping of the word "libertarian" when talking about Ron Paul. I sugggested the same. This article proves the point that "libertarian" lable is a hindrance/detriment.

"Libertarian" is such a vague term, though. Many lefties think of Bill Maher as a libertarian, even though he's one of the most politically correct socialists in media.

It's probably because the terms liberal and libertarian sound close enough to throw some people off on the left who thinks it means liberal.

Similarly, Democrats view Ralph Nader's role in the 2000 election negatively, whereas Republicans view it positively.

I wish they would have tested "Voluntaryist." It's on the rise, but still not in widespread circulation yet.

If Dr. Paul wishes to have any chance in 2012, he needs to completely avoid the "L" word and focus on calling himself a Republican, the end.

Hmm, I don't see it that way. I think it's a good thing. Anyway, the label doesn't matter. Neocons will not like the foreign policy of a Ron Paul and especially not someone like Johnson, not to mention the talk about failure of the war on drugs, etc.

I honestly it attracts people on the left who are not statist but feel betrayed by the Dems..I don't see anything wrong with that. Should RP change his views, too, to make Republicans view him better? no thanks.

Libertarianism is classic liberalism.

I also like how the more educated someone is the more they have a better opinion of capitalism.

What's sad is that militia garnered such a negative response.

And it's actually in the Constitution!
