I started playing with the Google Trends tool and it is quite revealing. For example:

http://www.google.com/trends?q=ron+paul%2C+mitt+romney%2C+rudy+Giuliani&ctab=0&geo=all&date=ytd&sort=0

You can adjust the time periods, regions, etc. Note the difference between the news reference volume and the search volume. Also note Salt Lake city :p

Absolutely incredible. That tells us that Mitt and Rudy are surviving solely on TV and news coverage to keep them public name recognition poll numbers up and that the news coverage and ads aren't translating into on-line activity. I think this shows that people believe what they see on tv.

I think it shows that 2 of those names are household names already and one isn't but people are very curious about this Ron Paul character they keep seeing on the news as the GOP Maverick.

Phoenix is near the top. I'm sure this has something to do with the Phoenix area meetups and their industrial-volume sign manufacturing. Looks like it works!

This might be more accurate - using only the most common name:

http://www.google.com/trends?q=ron+paul%2C+hillary%2C+giuliani%2C+romney %2C+huckabee&ctab=0&geo=all&date=mtd&sort=0

Notice Huckabee's recent growth...
