Not to be a downer, but that was preceded by, "I am not a leader.". Now one could interpret that as in direct relation to the tea party. ie: I am not a leader of the tea party. Or not. Either way, i would not be surprised to see that comment used against him in the future.

"So the libertarian says 'I don't need society'...", "All the libertarians I know say 'no gay marriage, and outlaw abortion'"

Matthews is just establishing a straw-man. He's too short sighted to really understand how the world works, so he just makes up the position of his opponent to be something simplistic, wrong, and easily dismantled.

The 'true' libertarian says that society needs to be a voluntary association, that marriage is not a state issue, and abortion is, at best, a tricky issue where the state currently has few constitutional underpinnings.

Great interview as far as levity goes though. I was expecting a shouting match. And good for Paul calling out Herbert "Hoover Dam" Hoover as a big spender - NOTE that Matthews immediately backed off his talking point, and regressed to Coolidge as the fiscal tightwad, almost acknowledging that he really knows that he was spewing pure bullshit by calling Hoover fiscally responsible.

That could actually be a really damn good quote. He is the leader of our movement. But he is not the leader of the tea-party movement. But that statement makes it clear that neither is Palin, or Beck without insulting them.

Maybe. But maybe Matthews isn't short sighted, and he understands how the world works. He's an ideologue, and his comments were intentional misrepresentation.

I think that's the more likely situation, probably because Dr. Paul's stances would most definitely appeal to more than a few democrats **if they only bothered to drop their venom and learn what his positions actually are** rather than continuing to allow themselves to be spoonfed the democrat ideology by their own "Faux News" known as MSNBC.

Could be wrong, but seriously...just as some neocons found RP and had the lightbulb moment, I think some democrats would have a similar experience...

This.

Lincoln's only experience in government was one term in the U.S. house. (Not saying he was the ideal president however; he was as bad as GWB on civil liberties.)

George Washington was a farmer and a soldier.

Jackson and Eisenhower were only generals.

Grover Cleveland was a sheriff, a mayor, and a two-year governor.

Woodrow Wilson's only experience was two years as NJ governor.

Same with Calvin Coolidge, who only served two years as MA governor. The rest of his political resume was as Lt. Gov and Veep. Hardly that qualified by what are assumed to be today's standards.

Our Presidential history is steeped with people whose qualifications we'd apparently laugh at today.

I will say as an ex hardball fan (don't hate me) that was a fair interview by Chris. He usually jumps all over the GOP and he gave Ron a lot of time to talk believe it or not.

Matthews: "You're kidding me, you're kidding me."

Paul: "Yeah, probably. Just I'm trying to needle you."

lmao :)

Great interview by Paul!

All things considered that was a good interview, and I admire Paul for going on the show.

He's fearless because truly there's nothing to be afraid of from these collectivist bullies..

Deep down I think Matthews does like Paul.. anyone else get that feeling?

Matthews is a longtime professional political commentator and still thinks the LP is against gay marriage and abortion? What a hack!

I thought that was a good interview. Good for Paul calling CM out on defending civil liberties but not economic liberties. He had no response for that.

I'm finding a lot of older people on the left are former Goldwater followers.

I absolutely loved how he nailed Matthews on the "society" B.S.

"Society is what I say it is, and you'll comply or I'll throw you in jail!!!" Uh, no mr matthews, that's called tyranny.

I also liked that he pointed out the discrepancy between believing in personal rights, but not economic rights, and vice versa.

The "Society" segment was my favorite part.
As soon as Matthews started to throw around that term, my immediate reaction was to scream: Who is this SOCIETY you refer to, Chris?
I was elated to hear Ron call him out on that.

There's opportunity there.

I think this clip ought to be shared with those on the left... It could make some people think.

Yep. Totally agree with this.

My Dad is almost there, and is a supporter. But he's still in "union" mode. To his defense, the unions ended up giving him a great job for life with a nice pension in retirement, so he can't complain.

What sucks about unions is as soon as you dissolve them, you'll need them again. http://www.labusas.org/forum/images/smilies/retard.gif

Sorry to get off topic. Back to our regularly scheduled program.

There's nothing wrong with unions, they just shouldn't get special privileges from government (and corporations shouldn't either).

Chris Matthews is a likable guy. I met him twice, he's really friendly. He also does a fairly decent job moderating vs any guest, left or right. Recently (since Obama got elected and MSNBC became the left version of Fox) he's gone downhill, but as an individual he's a good guy. He's also sympathetic, someone who's looking for the issue to be put to him in a way that he cannot combat. Somebody like Schiff would have Matthews on the bandwagon in ten seconds.
