The focus of this article was that more than 1/4 don't qualify b/c of poor fitness, but I was really surprised to read this
Mission: Readiness' report, "Too Fat to Fight," said that 75 percent of young Americans between the ages of 17 to 24 do not qualify for the military because of failure to graduate [from high school], criminal records or physical problems. The study cited Department of Defense and health data.

Fellow men, if you ever need to dodge the draft , just chow down til you weigh 260 pounds.

it is amazing how many are so fat now.
I was looking at my HS yearbook from the 70s, and you could count the obese in single digits.

How quickly do you think one could put on 100 pounds if there is ever to be a draft?

Awesome. At least our poor health state and moral state is good for something.

Maybe if we didn't have bases damn near everywhere and weren't always meddling around the world, we wouldn't need so many soldiers.

I love how the quote names three problems, but focuses on one.
Perhaps it's because the Government already meddles so excessively in the education and incarceration aspects, and they don't want to admit any wrongdoing on those fronts? After all, this is a great chance to insert themselves into our lives more and more (even though school lunches were supposedly put into place to make sure the scrawny kids in school got the right stuff to make them into super soldiers).

There's one quote from an Air Farce general that say the problem is obesity, but the report was quoted as saying "health problems", not specifically mentioning obesity.
Wonder what other health problems are fouling up the system's farm program of cannon fodder?
Like a prescription history of happy pills maybe?

Dude, if you so much as drink 3-4 beers 3 times a week now you have to go see a shrink go get a waiver nowadays. I found that out last week the hard way and have to make another trip to MEPS just to talk to a shrink for about 5 minutes.
Also, I am curious because since January when I decided I wanted to join the Marine Corps I have lost 26 lbs. When I first went to talk to the recruiters I found they have two weights they measure you by. When I went I was down to 220. The first is DEP weight and the second is ship weight. For instance I was allowed to weigh 222 lbs to DEP in, but to ship need to weigh 207 max. Currently I weigh 214.
So that doesn't necessarily mean that the 18-24 age group are not completely out of range for joining.

When I was a recruiter nearly 20 years ago, I had a young lady who was disqualified for a few years because she had been subscribed Prozac. She was from an upper middle class family and her family had the money to send her to a shrink who prescribed them. When I talked to the psychiatrist, she stated there should be no mental reason to exclude the young lady from military service but "the system" saw Prozac and it was an absolute disqualifier.

New strategy to end the wars: Feed the children twinkies, McDonald's, prozac and ritalin.

There you have it.
I'm now convinced it's more than just obesity that has the system's panties in a bunch over this.

Oh, but thank god he's not fat. If he was, he might still have arms and legs. Those would just add to his body weight.

yeah. Though you may be able to get some of it wavered. They also ask a lot about asthma, inhaler usage, hell they asked me if I ever used acutane for acne. Luckily that was a decade ago cause I damned sure don't want another waver.
However, currently the military is being incredibly selective of who it takes as there are a ton of people trying to join right now.

Wow, I was 17 and hungover from a night on the town when I passed my physical and took my Oath. That was in 1974.
Out of over 700 that started basics with me, about 350 graduated from AIT. That was the last of the 16 week training cycle.

Interesting, I figured they took whomever they could get.
That was my understanding as well.
I'm guessing that both huge financial incentives and a shitty private economy are helping recruitment more than we could know. I, for one, am happy that the Army actually has enough qualified people to turn down lesser quality applicants.

There was a hilarious pamphlet published in the 1960's titled something like "Skills for evading the Draft." Ive tried a few times to find it on da netz with no success. It started out with simple things such as writing "deceased" on the draft notice and returning it, then proceeded to more advanced tactics such as showing up at the interview drunk or stoned, wearing a food-stained T shirt and rambling about wanting to kill gooks for Jesus. Drooling is a plus. :D

I graduated from high school only a few years ago and even I see the difference. We've lost the shaming. When I was in elementary school being fat was unique and they were made fun of. Not nice - but it probably got you motivated.
Now the fatties are in the majority - the shame is gone.

One is likely to gain fat faster via carbohydrates (no lasting satiation of appetite) than consuming fat which tends to satiate the appetite. Keto diets work based on a relative high fat content.
