A recent Rasmussen national telephone poll surprised even supporters of Texas Congressman Ron Paul. The poll of likely voters showed that Paul would be in a dead heat with President Barack Obama if the two were facing one another for the Presidency, with 42% for Obama and 41% for Paul.

What?!

Many on both sides of the political fence have struggled for an answer to this poll. Some analysts believe it is simply a sign of the times of just how unpopular Obama is getting, while others point to the rise of the Tea Party movement as a clear indication of the nation's anti-government, anti-incumbent fervor of late.

Both these points have legitimate currency in today's political climate, but they ignore the appeal of Ron Paul himself. Let's face it: Congressman Paul has staying power, and his strict constitutionalist views have distinguished him over the past several years. While some national political figures are liberal and others conservative, Paul is beyond all that, arguing for a serious top-down reform of the way our American bureaucracy and economic policy works.

As a result, if the games in Washington played by lobbyists, bankers, and politicians in both parties have got you fighting mad, Ron Paul ends up being an appealing choice--made more so given his rise in the polls.

But Paul is now in his mid seventies. How far can he expect to take his revolution?

Supporters of the ten-term Texas Congressional veteran point to another septuagenarian, Ronald Reagan, on the age issue. Like Reagan, Paul has the necessary thick skin and good humor needed for his previous and next run for President in the Republican primaries. But yes, this is going to likely be his last great national crusade.

Ron Paul's most admiring supporters say he can go all the way this time. The nation's economic plight is a perfect storm for Paul's economic solutions. The American voters are finally ready for a new direction, one based on solid economic theory, not Obama's runaway spending.

But even if Paul is unable to win the Presidency, might he realistically make a serious bid for Vice President with a Romney, Palin, or Petraeus? Stranger things have happened in American politics, and one thing's for sure: whomever is the next Republican nominee is going to need the energy of Ron Paul's wing of the GOP to win in November. Stay tuned.

Not gonna happen. First of all, none of them would ask him. Secondly, I don't think he'd accept even if they did. He's not so desperate that he would pal around with neocons/warmongers.

yeah so true! if that was the case, i would drop ron paul like a hot potato!!

there is no way the Liberty Tea Party Movement would buy that equation!!

after what the failed gop establishment has pulled in recent yrs! i wouldn't buy palin or romney or newt and the rest of the failed gop as vp to Ron Paul!!!

the gop has dug their own holes. The only way i see for the gop out of this hole is RON PAUL 2012!!

Being a neocon and picking RP as your VP is a deathwish for the neocon and not from the establishment. Just saying, not a threat, just an observation.

Accepting is also a deathwish for RP from the establishment once the election is over.
