Former U.S. Rep. John Hostettler picked up a big endorsement Friday from conservative hero Ron Paul in his bid to be Indiana's next senator.

Paul, a Republican congressman from Texas who ran for president in 2008, issued a statement saying he was "proud to endorse" Hostettler, and calling him a "good friend and valuable ally against big government."

"The American people need more than just another vote," said Paul, who recently won a straw poll of potential 2012 presidential candidates at the Conservative Political Action Conference. "They need a man of principle who will always stand up in fight. They need a citizen politician who will represent them. John Hostettler is just that kind of man."

Hostettler is one of five Republicans seeking the GOP nomination in the May 4 primary. Also running are former Sen. Dan Coats, considered by many the frontrunner; state Sen. Marlin Stutzman; Richmond financial adviser Don Bates Jr.; and Fishers plumber and tea party activist Richard Behney.

Asked for Coats' reaction to the endorsement, spokesman Kevin Kellems issued a statement that didn't even mention Paul's name. Instead, he said, that Coats' "emphasis on limited government, lower taxes, less spending, a strong national defense and protecting personal liberty is resonating with Hoosiers across Indiana from all walks of life."

And Stutzman issued his own release suggesting he, too, will be getting some big-name backing from conservatives, saying he'd have a "major announcement" on Monday with American Conservative Union Chairman David Keene.
