You need to use quotes to get an accurate trend graph for Ron Paul. His name is composed of two pretty common names.

Here's what I get for "Rand Paul", "Sarah Palin", "Nancy Pelosi", "Ron Paul" (http://www.google.com/trends?q=%22rand+paul%22%2C+%22sarah+palin%22%2C+% 22Nancy+Pelosi%22%2C+%22ron+Paul%22&ctab=0&geo=all&date=ytd&sort=1) over the last year (Palin is the red line):
