Former governor Mitt Romney won a straw poll at the Southern Republican Leadership Council gathering this weekend, edging out Congressman Ron Paul of Texas by just one vote. The poll of GOP activists points to a big divide within the GOP and a lack of consensus over a potential nominee for 2012.

The straw poll results showed Romney with 439 votes to Paul's 438, both getting 24 percent of the overall vote. Sarah Palin got 330 votes, just one behind former speaker Newt Gingrich (331), TPM reported.

Paul is often dismissed as too outside the mainstream to make a serious run -- sort of like a Dennis Kucinich of the right. But although he is unlikely to win a nominating battle in the GOP, those who buy into the "Ron Paul revolution" could support a third-party or independent run for president in 2012.
