WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) -- A diplomat in the Qatar embassy in Washington, D.C. reportedly attempted to detonate an explosive device aboard a United flight to Denver on Wednesday evening, reports say.
Federal air marshals subdued the man who attempted to light his shoes on fire, according to ABC News. The report said, while the presence of explosives has not yet been confirmed, authorities believe it is an attempted 'shoe bomb' attack.
ABC News identified the suspect as Mohammed al Modadi, a diplomat in the Qatar embassy in Washington, D.C. al Modadi has full diplomat immunity as the 3rd secretary and vice-consul.
The incident involved United flight 663, a Boeing 757, which departed Washington Reagan International Airport. It landed safely in Denver.
ABC News reported that two fighter jets were scrambled from Buckley Air Force Base to accompany the plane as it flew the final 40 miles to Denver. The United jet was reportedly being directed to a remote location at the Denver airport.
