Norman Matton Thomas (November 20, 1884 – December 19, 1968) was a leading American socialist, pacifist, and six-time presidential candidate for the Socialist Party of America. He was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1911. As a candidate for President of the U. S., Norman Thomas said, in a 1944 epoch speech:

“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of “liberalism”, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.”

He went on to say: “I no longer need to run as a Presidential Candidate for the Socialist Party. The Democratic Party has adopted our platform.”

Reminds me of this story:

Russian emigrant seeks freedom with Texas Nationalists (http://www.texasnationalist.com/info/tnm-news/280-russian-emigrant-seeks-freedom-with-texas-nationalists-)

Texas Nationalist Movement (http://www.texasnationalist.com/)
26 March 2010

The mainstream news media and progressives scoff at suggestions that the Obama Administration is pushing the United States ever closer to a socialist dictatorship. One Texan has more justification than most, however, to know it when he sees it.

Sergei Smet grew up in the Soviet Union, where he witnessed first-hand the “brainwashing, manipulation and brutality” of unbridled socialism, and the San Antonio resident says what is going on in Washington, D.C. scares him to death.

In 2008, during the election campaign, I listened to one of Obama’s speeches,” said Smet, who tried to leave the Soviet Union for six years before winning the “green card lottery” in 1995, “I was listening to that speech for maybe five minutes and I figured out he was talking exactly like the old Soviet leaders used to talk. I was listening to this B.S. all my life!

“I said to myself, ‘Uh-oh, if he wins it’s going to be a real mess.’ I got depressed. I’m living in a socialist country again.”

Smet was a musician in the USSR, and after emigrating first to California he began living the American dream the old-fashioned way: hard work.

“It took me six years to be able to come here because I was not a religious refugee,” Smet said. “At the time it was my wife, my daughter and myself. We had no friends, no relatives, little money and little command of the language.”

Smet didn’t soak off social services, however. After first getting a job as a pizza delivery boy because of the lack of musicians’ jobs, he began studying computer technology and immersed himself in studying English while at times working three jobs. He eventually landed a job as a telecommunications administrator.

“It was freedom,” Smet said. “I was in a country where the parties changed power every few years, but we were free and the government didn’t tell us what to do.”

Then came the 2008 election.

Smet said he began looking around for some way to help stop something he knew all too well doesn’t work.

“I came here for freedom and here it’s going to be taken away again,” he said. “What to do, where to go, where to hide from the socialist agenda?”

Last spring, Smet found the website of the Texas Nationalist Movement, and hope returned.

“I really liked the ideas of the Texas Nationalist movement, because I understood that the entire political system in Washington, Democrats and Republicans alike, both of them are the same,” he said. “Nothing could be repaired any more. For me, the only solution was for one state or a group of states to secede and form their own country.”

Smet said he feared “politics” because of his experience growing up in the USSR.

“In the Soviet Union, the brainwashing system worked so well, from birth people were ‘politicized’ about how to help spread communism around the world,” Smet said. He noted that some maintain public schools are now brainwashing American schoolchildren.

“Obama and his team, they are on a mission,” he said. “They are telling us openly that their goal is to de-develop the United States and transform it to a socialist country. That is exactly what we were told, how socialist revolutions take place.”

And, Smet warns ominously, when socialist revolutions progress to a certain point, violence often becomes the only way to forestall them.

“I hear people talking about how things will change with the November elections, or in 2012,” Smet said. “In my opinion, these guys are not fools. They know what’s going to happen in November if they allow us to vote. They have two options -- not hold elections, or (rig) them.”

Smet warns that the only way to avoid a bloody revolution is for Texas to strike out on its own.

“Nothing will work to stop them,” he said. “Not the Tea Parties, not elections, it’s not going to work.

“In the Soviet Union, to get into a college you had to pass a test on how to help spread communism around the world,” he said. “Obama and his team are doing it exactly by the book. Of course, they’re doing some modifications to the tactics, but the foundation is exactly the same. It is going to be blood in the streets at some point. They will do it.”
