View Full Version : What a difference one "meaningless" straw poll makes

We've all heard the pundits declare straw polls "meaningless" in the wake of Ron Paul's decisive victory at CPAC in February. However, the "scientific" polls the pundits love so much say otherwise:

Ron Paul Pre-CPAC
2%: http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?t=230928

Ron Paul Post-CPAC
11%: http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?t=236453
8%: http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?t=237578

Want to see the difference another major straw poll victory would make?

1. Buy your SRLC ticket at http://www.campaignforliberty.com/srlc2010.php and
2. Pledge to vote for Ron Paul on Saturday, April 10 at http://battleofneworleans2010.com
3. RSVP at http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=107027639325734

I'm amazed that PPP chose to include Ron Paul among their four candidates to test in their poll. I believe Ron's CPAC victory had everything to do with that decision.

Yes, I don't see CPAC having much of an impact. Around here, hardly anyone has heard of it, much less known about the straw poll and who won. I told several of my classes and I had one person know what CPAC even was.

The sheeple don't need to have actually heard about the CPAC straw poll results to have subconsciously absorbed the buz generated by them and conclude that Ron Paul must be a serious contender.

I sent out a mass email this morning.
Sent a message to Trevor Lyman too, maybe he can help promote the event.

The proof is in the pudding - if these things didn't matter, GOP politicos from near and far wouldn't bother putting in facetime at them.

And the poll figures provide excellent confirmation of it!

Of course straw polls matter.

Any response from Trevor? (I've contacted him a couple times as well.)

We need to throw everything we have at this.

I thought Ron Paul did well in the straw polls leading up to the primaries for the 2008 election.

But his performance in the straw polls did not translate into meaningful votes in the primaries.

Since he is consistently performing well in the straw polls, I would look at these polls more as a long-term predictor of the future, not what's necessarily going to happen in the next election.

we did well in small local straw polls that were basically local GOP fundraisers.
we didn't even compete in these straw polls. the big ones.

He did impressively in some big polls in 2007-2008 too.

All small potatoes compared to CPAC, SRLC and VVS.

The straw polls he's capable of winning this time make national, even world headlines (his CPAC victory was covered down here in the Sydney Morning Herald).

Romney won 2007, 2008 and 2009 and came in second in 2010. Yet he didn't get the nomination in 2008, the second place winner (McCain) did.

I still don't think straw polls are a good predictor of what is going to happen in the near term. Maybe over the longer term.

I just love to see the mainstream GOP behaving like children.
