Lots of entertaining comments. :)

DES MOINES, Iowa -- White House officials said Wednesday that more than 16,000 people signed up online for 3,000 available seats at a President Barack Obama speech set for Thursday in Iowa City.

The visit comes nearly three years after Obama came to the city as a presidential candidate to outline his plan for overhauling the nation's health care system.

Obama will talk about how health care insurance reform will cut costs for businesses and families as well as give them greater control over their health care.

Obama first outlined his health care plan at a rally in Iowa City in May 2007, nearly eight months before his surprising win in the Iowa caucuses. (Bruno's editorial - Iowa apologizes)

His visit comes only a few days after the House gave final approval to a health care overhaul.

Anti Rally Set Wednesday

A group against health care reform is planning a rally in Iowa City Wednesday night.

The "Stand Up for Freedom Rally" will take place at the University of Iowa. Look for coverage on KCCI-TV and on KCCI.com.

Planning For Presidential Visit

Iowa City Police Chief Sam Hargadine said members of the Secret Service have been in town since Friday preparing for the visit. The Secret Service held a briefing with Iowa City Police Department on Thursday.

“We’re dusting off a lot of the old plans from previous (presidential) visits,” said Hargadine.

Hargadine said the Secret Service is “familiar” with Iowa City due to the campaign trail stops.

He said local traffic won’t likely be affected by the President’s visit until Thursday morning.
