I read this article (http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/10/04/campaign.cash/index.html) and started crunching numbers. Could it be that Ron Paul had more donors than any other Republican candidate? If so, why isn't everyone talking about this? Here is what I mean:

Thompson raised $9.3 million from 80,000 supporters during the third quarter

of Romney's $62.4 million total, more than $17 million of that money came from the candidate's loans to his campaign.
More than 100,000 donors have contributed to Romney this year

Thompson:

9.3mil / 80K = an average contribution of $116.25 per person for the 3rd quarter

Romney:

62.4mil - 17mil = 45.4mil

45.4mil / 100K = an average contribution of $454.00 per person for the year

So based on that article alone you can see the reason the other candidates are raising so much money is they are getting more per person, NOT because they have more people contributing.

Ron Paul raised $5million in the 3rd quarter and I read the average contribution per person was only $40. Does this mean Ron Paul could have had 125,000 donors just for the 3rd quarter? That number would be well over the number of donors for the other Republican candidates. Someone please check my math or find the actual numbers or something please!

We'll have to wait for the FEC filings before we figure all this out I think. Campaigns are throwing numbers around that aren't necessary apples-to-apple comparisons. Some numbers could be "total number of donors," some "total number of donations," some "total number of new donors," etc. I've had this thought as well though, that if the average Paul donation is $40, then that means 125,000 donations, though not necessarily 125,000 donors.

Average donation does not necessarily equal total donors; however it would take a lot of people donating multiple times to skew a number this large. It will be interesting to see how many individual donors there were?

This would be huge if it was the case.

My guess is that Ron has about 50,000 unique donors. The average online donation has been running about $90 and some people have donated multiple times.

The $40 figure sited by Jesse Benton must be the average for direct mail donations (which makes sense based on my experience).

The number of donors may be higher once you include purchases of materials by people who haven't otherwise donated.

I remember hearing an interview where Dr. Paul said that he had over 40,000 new donors this quarter. :) (Trying to remember where now...)

I have donated multiple times. I think Paul donors probably give a lot more times than some of the big box candidates. It will be interesting to see what the FEC filings show.

I don't remember where I posted the link, which thread, but these other candidates get FAR more 2300 and 4600 donations than Paul. That's a huge part of it.
