I don't agree that the government should be subsidizing it at a loss and it would probably do better under private management as nearly anything does, but there is definitely a market (teehee) for a market like this here. As Kucinich (who, by the way, is a socialist weasel that people here love to fellate for some reason) pointed out, these "workers" are not government employees. They're entrepreneurs. Each stall in the market is independently owned. What the city is doing here is barely a step above providing roads and utilities for businesses.

I'm well aware that there are good arguments for getting government out of utilities too, but that's not the first thing we should be attacking and neither is the West Side Market. If you're going to criticize the government for being in businesses it shouldn't, there are far better examples like the AUTO INDUSTRY and HEALTHCARE.

Everyone in the Cleveland metro area loves this place and couldn't care less whether the manager knows what kind of revenue the vendors make. That isn't his business. There is no supermarket in the region that offers the same variety of gourmet foods and meats both fresh and cured. Where else can I get jowl bacon, pork bellies, beef tongue, flank steak, beef hearts, oxtail, whole rabbits, duck breasts, european-style sausages of every type... I'll grant that the produce is usually nothing special, but you can find some real deals if you know what things cost. The supermarket Drew mentioned was replaced by an east coast chain 15 years ago, which shows how long he's been out of town.

Kucinich is at least an honest guy and not corrupt. Sure he is very wrong when it comes to politics, but he isn't elitist CFR, Bilderberg Group, etc. He is very misguided but I wouldn't call him a weasel. Consider him simply paving the road to hell with good intentions vs paving the road to hell with the intention of making to to hell.

The problem with Kucinich is that he just doesn't get it. At the end of the show when he talks about how he wanted the city to buy the Cavs I wanted to reach through the TV to slap some sense into him. He doesn't realize that it's not governments role to buy sports teams, golf courses, etc.
