What people don't seem to understand is that the free market would pretty much make insurance companies largely irrelevant. And by free market, I mean a completely free market, not some bullshit half-ass crony "market". But actually abolishing all medical licensing, all medical regulation, all drug regulation, legalize all drugs, get rid of patents, etc. Hardcore free markets.
There would be so many new business models popping up that nobody would need the insurance companies because they would just be an inefficient middle man.
People may still buy insurance against unforeseen catastrophes, but they wouldn't pay for every damn thing. Insurance is supposed to be about insurance against risk. Does your car insurance pay for every tuneup? Of course not!
Now you can see why the insurance companies love socialized medicine and regulation. It's the only way they can stay in business because they can't compete in a truly free market. So all you "progressives" out there who hate the insurance companies, as do I, why the hell do you trust the state so much - the very same entity that keeps them alive?
