Then you might want to think about moving to Austin, TX, its #1 on Google Trends for the search terms Ron Paul, Ayn Rand, Libertarian and Athiest.

Ironically, I live here yet had thought it was a den of government working Obama bumber sticker driving Michael Moore watching leftits in an otherwise conservative state. Guess I was wrong. It must be more fiscally conservative and socially liberal.

I'm more a fan of her writing style than a lot of her philosophy. Rothbard has done a few pieces which does a number on her. One thing I do like about Rand is her ability to wake people up and show them why capitalism isn’t “evil.”

I'm all the above AND i live in Austin.

I find the average adult is a Obama lover, but the average young person is more libertarian. And the same with religious views, as most young people tend to be Atheists or Agnostic.

So, basically, when the youth here grow up and run the city it really will be the most Libertarian city in the States (a post someone made the other day).

Rand had the correct basis for her philosophy, but she misapplied it on many different occasions. This is easy to do, because she based her arguments around a premise that governments are required to defend freedom, even when her own masterwork, Atlas Shrugged, showed an example where that was NOT required. Most of the problems with her ideas come from this premise.

A better system is set up by the non-aggression principle. It does not allow for a government with power over individuals, which is hard to understand for people so used to living daily with arbitrary rules imposed on us by these "people". A bit of imagination is required. Once you see various systems laid out on a consistent basis, you start to see that it could indeed work. When you see actual examples in the real world, you see that indeed it does work.

Like I said, it's interesting how much the haters hate.

Ayn Rand's views on foreign policy were definitely flawed. What's funny is she doesn't even follow her own philosophy. In her earlier works, she explains why Objectivism demands you have a non-interventionist foreign policy. But I think she let her personal feelings cloud her judgment on the middle east.

Regardless, Ayn Rand was an excellent writer and incredible at communicating libertarian ideas to the common man. Calling her a dumb bitch seems ignorant, at best.

Interesting how this has turned into a debate about Ayn Rand. Didn't know she was so hated in the libertarian community. I attended a major tea party and Atlas Shrugged was practically sachrosynct so this is the first time I've heard a contrary opinion. It is rated as the 2nd most influential book in history, after the Bible and I would argue has done more to spread the concept of liberty than anything else every written.

I know. I was surprised by it, too, when I came to this forum. I just think it's weird how MUCH they hate her. I can understand this kind of anger toward people like Obama, Pelosi, etc. and necons like Limbaugh, Oreilly and others. But towards Rand? It makes me wonder if they've ever read any of her books or articles.

Some of it is Christians who get their panties in a bunch because she is a militant atheist.

Others just think her moral 'philosophy' is largely bunk and results in a the most reprehensible apologists for big business, the wealthy elite, etc (not that it's necessarily her fault that people like that exist, but she is their intellectual founding father).

Agreed, our YAL chapter co-hosted a speaker from the Ayn Rand Institute with the Objectivists club. You would have never known the different between the person from the Ayn Rand Institute and someone in the liberty movement. He talked about Mises, ending the fed, what capitalism really is, how government's only role is a protector of rights, etc... and he definitely sounded nothing like that video of Rand on foreign policy.

I like Ayn Rand, and that video, if anything, makes me respect her more. I also support Israel's right to exist, being that it is a semi-free country, just as free as any secular Western European social democracy, in a region surrounded by monarchies, theocracies, dictatorships, and groups of racist savages that want to kill Jews because they believe they have some sort of racial or collective right to the land. Hate me if you wish.

I also broadly support Ron Paul, but you just have to laugh at some libertarians that think "she's dumb" "I hate her!" "she's a freak" "she's nuts!" etc. are rational arguments.

Now the misconception here is that she is somehow calling for an interventionist foreign policy. That is not true, as stated over and over again, even covered by Leonard Peikoff when asked about Rand's foreign policy views, that she was in his own words "a straight up isolationist. She opposed every war she lived through." (Note also, that when asked what his favorite president was in the same podcast, Peikoff also replied "None of them... except maybe for Washington, since he had the only great foreign policy. Stay out of foreign entanglements and such.") Ayn Rand fully endorsed the "America First" foreign policy of the Old Right and classical liberals. However, there is no place for pacifism (the idea that all uses of force are automatically immoral) no place for multiculturalism (the idea that all cultural beliefs are automatically the same and morally equivalent no matter what) and no place for refusing to render moral judgement in her ethical philosophy. What she is saying here is that Israel, as a secular Western civilized nation deserves moral support, and has the right to protect its citizens against invasion. Do not equate this with some sort of rightwing "Israel first" mentality. Do not suggest that this is somehow unqualified, or unconditional support for the Israeli government, no matter what they do. Do not suggest that she is somehow condemning all Palestinians, collectively, as worthless or some such nonsense. If you really are interested in the truth, you go find the rational defense of Israel from Objectivists if you do some basic google searching.

Anyway, go ahead and pile on with the ad hominem and strawmen.

"Personal feelings" my ass. Try ethnopolitical interests.

BTW I'd have no problem with her support of Israel if her philosophy were nationalist-socialist, "might makes right" and collective punishment for anyone who dares resist "God's Chosen".

Its her hypocrisy I have a problem with.

Right. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the genocide they have perpetrated on their own cousins (Palestinians are descendants of the Jews who remained in Israel but converted to Islam during the Islamic expansion).

I'm also sure it has nothing to do with the fact that they were run off of the land that they legitimately owned, not even at gunpoint, but at "tankpoint" and "attack helicopterpoint", and had their land seized by those who came after and found the place "abandoned". It also has nothing to do with machine gunning children for throwing rocks. Or for cutting off access of the ghettos to the outside world, destroying all productive capacity, and shutting off power, food imports, water, and fuel imports.

Israel is worse than Apartheid South Africa, yet for some reason they still get our support (ie US tax dollars).

I don't hate you. I hate your stupidity, and your support for bigoted, ultra oppressive, ultra collectivist governments.
