EMAIL FROM WIKILEAKS

FYI: US Intelligence planned to destroy WikiLeaks

http://wikileaks.org/#us-intel-wikileaks (http://wikileaks.org/#us-intel-wikileaks)

This document is a classifed (SECRET/NOFORN) 32 page U.S.
counterintelligence investigation into WikiLeaks. ``The possibility
that current employees or moles within DoD or elsewhere in the U.S.
government are providing sensitive or classified information to
Wikileaks.org cannot be ruled out''. It concocts a plan to fatally
marginalize the organization. Since WikiLeaks uses ``trust as a
center of gravity by protecting the anonymity and identity of the
insiders, leakers or whisteblowers'', the report recommends ``The
identification, exposure, termination of employment, criminal
prosecution, legal action against current or former insiders,
leakers, or whistlblowers could potentially damage or destroy this
center of gravity and deter others considering similar actions from
using the Wikileaks.org Web site''. [As two years have passed since
the date of the report, with no WikiLeaks' source exposed, it appears
that this plan was ineffective]. As an odd justificaton for the
plan, the report claims that ``Several foreign countries including
China, Israel, North Kora, Russia, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe have
denounced or blocked access to the Wikileaks.org website''. The
report provides further justification by enumerating embarrassing
stories broken by WikiLeaks---U.S. equipment expenditure in Iraq,
probable U.S. violations of the Cemical Warfare Convention Treaty
in Iraq, the battle over the Iraqi town of Fallujah and human rights
violations at Guantanmo Bay...

Wow. So they're more interested in scaring everyone into silence than they are looking at their own security issues?

Indeed.

This is pretty fucking hilariously ironic that this document ended up leaked via wikileaks :D:D:D:D:D:D

This makes the US government no different than that of Soviet Russia's. They're censoring and attempting to take down anyone spreading the truth.

plan, the report claims that ``Several foreign countries including
China, Israel, North Kora, Russia, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe have
denounced or blocked access to the Wikileaks.org website''.

The only difference between the US federal government and North Korea's government is that NK is open about their fascist bullshit.

Few comments from reddit that made some sense...

I read the document. It was interesting, but "planned to destroy Wikileaks" is a bit sensationalist IMO. The Army plans for everything. You can find plans for the invasion of Canada and Mexico. The existence of this document hardly surprises me, and it's the evidence of the execution, not the existence of the plan, that would be interesting to me. I'm not surprised at all really.

I spent some of my military time (not the US military, but the point remains) in a unit that dealt - amongst other things - with the preparation of some pretty insane contingencies and "cabinet plans" (as in; plans kept filed in a cabinet in case a use for them ever arose).
I can vouch for this.
The military isn't behaving maliciously or conspiratorially in this case, it's merely abiding by its own boy-scout ethos of always being prepared.

You are correct. Military has pre-written contingency plans for...well...everything. And I mean absolutely everything. True enough, singling out wikileaks is a bit disturbing, but this fits the profile of having contingency plans for every imaginable scenario no matter how ridiculous.

The fact they single out one of the biggest growing source of whistleblowing is indeed disturbing.

Wikileaks being shut down suddenly would be disturbing.

Frankly, I doubt Wikileaks was singled out so much as it was simply selected by someone who saw the contingency plans and thought, "oh, wow!"

As Gunny says, the military have plans for literally any scenario. When I was in college and taking a military history course, one of the guest lecturers was a gent who had taught at the Army's War College. He explained to a thoroughly shocked class (much to his amusement, I think) how the U.S. had plans on the books regarding how to handle things if we went to war with England... and yeah, Canada too.

Is it overkill? (no pun intended) Yeah, probably. But that doesn't change the fact that this is military procedure.

I wouldn't be surprised to learn the U.S has plans on the books to handle any number of "alien invasion" scenarios - NOT because the government "knows all about the little green men" but because of an expectation that every single scenario should be covered.

Well if they did the right thing they wouldn't have to be afraid of leaks would they? I can't wait till the government starts cutting services, salarys, and pensions. Just think how many leaks will be coming out when that happens.

The quoted post is a problematic one from my perspective. How you read so much into so relatively small an issue is both astounding and saddening. In retrospect, with the posts from people confirming that contingency planning is a favored past-time of the military, you may wish to retract such a statement which flies in the face of the pursuit of truth and serves only sensationalist interests.
