Ex-CPD officer Tindall convicted of bank robbery
HOUSTON – A federal jury convicted Michael Edward Tindall, 48, a 22-year veteran of the Conroe Police Department, Thursday for robbing First Bank of Conroe on Aug. 11, 2008.
Jurors deliberated about three hours Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning before returning the guilty verdict, said Robert Scardino, Tindall’s lead defense attorney.
Tindall was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals following the verdict in the four-week trial and will be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Melinda Harmon June 25. He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.

Former Lewiston police chief Dave Kleinschmidt, who was fired Wednesday night by the City Council, had a criminal record, and city officials say he lied about his previous employment.
Council members recently learned that Kleinschmidt was found guilty in 2000 of filing a false police report. And now the city's mayor says the council may consider overhauling the troubled department - even to the point of disbanding the police force.
"We want to have our own police force," Mayor Dave Sommer said. "But how much at the cost to our residents?"

HAMMOND — A former South Bend police officer pleaded guilty Thursday in the attempted robbery of a gas station manager.
Jamie Buford, 41, would receive 15 years in prison under the binding plea agreement, should U.S. District Court Judge Philip Simon decide to approve it. Simon said he will reserve final judgment until he reviews a pre-sentence investigation report to be completed by federal probation staff.

After two public records requests, Youngstown's 911 center Thursday released a recorded conversation between a dispatcher and an officer who was at the scene the night a disabled man said he was beaten by a cop.
Records also show Officer Robert Jolliff has been similarly accused before and is now off work.
The conversation was made on a recorded line and happened about an hour after Willie Daniel, who is paralyzed from the waist down, says he was beaten and dragged out of his vehicle on Wilson Avenue following a crash almost two weeks ago.
Daniel said Jolliff hit him the face while he was handcuffed. During the conversation, the dispatcher asks Officer Aaron Coleman what happened to Daniel.
Coleman: We had to take the guy to the hospital.
Dispatcher: Why you guys beating up on handicapped people?
Coleman: I didn't put a hand on him, why who told you dude?
Dispatcher: I know things. He will be alright.
The department is currently conducting an internal investigation on the incident.
A public records for Jolliff's prior discipline showed 12 prior internals in the past eight years. The internals ranged from conduct unbecoming to an officer and excessive force. He was cleared on at least half. The outcomes of some are unknown.
Meanwhile, Jolliff is now off on sick leave. Police officials said he became ill and fell during his shift Wednesday. Officials said he may be placed on an a workers' compensation leave.

A former Riverside police officer was sentenced to 15 years in prison today for a series of armed robberies of auto parts stores in Riverside and Moreno Valley.
David Reeves pleaded guilty to seven felonies, including robbery, attempted robbery and using a firearm related to two off-duty armed robberies at Auto Zone stores.
Reeves was still on the force when he was arrested in October at a Moreno Valley store. Authorities say he entered the store with a stolen gun and attempted to rob a customer at gunpoint before he was overpowered by employees.

NEWARK — An East Orange police officer who was off-duty but in uniform was arrested Wednesday morning, charged with assaulting a 20-year-old woman at a bus stop in Newark, then spitting on her, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said today.
The officer, Anthony Reed, 31, had just finished his shift and was driving his own car when he allegedly approached the woman on Stuyvesant Avenue and Abinger Place around 10 a.m., said Charlotte Smith, a prosecutor’s office spokeswoman.
The officer exchanged words with the woman, who was sitting at the bus stop, and who authorities said he had never met. Reed then got out of his car, grabbed her, pushed her to ground and spit on her face, police said.

The former Dodge County sheriff and a supporter pleaded guilty Thursday in a vote-buying scandal.
Lawton Douglas and Olin Norman "Bobo" Gibson entered those guilty pleas in U.S. District Court in Dublin, according to Ed Sutcliffe, an agent in the FBI's Savannah office.
Douglas was defeated for re-election in 2008 after serving one four-year term.
Thursday, he admitted conspiracy to commit election fraud, Sutcliffe said. Gibson pleaded guilty to vote-buying.
A federal indictment last year accused them of paying off voters in a July 2004 primary election and a runoff the next month with cash, alcohol and drugs.
Their sentencing has not been scheduled.

Jeffrey Lehrmann, a former police detective who now works as a special agent for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, pleaded guilty in federal court to a charge that he failed to report a cover-up in the investigation of the Danziger Bridge shootings in New Orleans, the Department of Justice said in a statement Thursday.
Lehrmann also admitted he helped compile a false report on the incidents, and was with others when they planted a gun as part of the cover-up, according to court documents.
Last month, former police Lt. Michael Lohman pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice in connection with the cover-up.
