Early provisional results from just 18,000 voters showed the "No" campaign ahead with a dominant 98% of votes.

Talks between Iceland, the UK and the Netherlands three countries broke down on Friday without agreement.

According to results released Sunday, just over 93 percent of voters said "no" in Saturday's ballot, while only 1.8 percent voted "yes," according to a count of all but 2,500 of the 143,784 votes cast. The rest were blank or spoiled ballots.

The McDowell News: Revolt in Iceland offers glimpse of America's future (http://www2.mcdowellnews.com/content/2010/mar/09/combs-revolt-iceland-offers-glimpse-americas-futur/)

It's regrettable that the American press, other than business-specific niche outlets, virtually ignores the news from the rest of the world. The news from Iceland this week is instructive, because we Americans are facing a very similar situation of mounting untenable debt and our federal and local governments and financial institutions are taking a similar approach -- borrow more money -- to dealing with the financial crisis.

Iceland saw what may have been the first volley of return fire in a global war with governments, banks and monopoly business on one side and productive people on the other. The peasants have revolted. In a national referendum last weekend, the people of Iceland rejected their country's version of the bailout for the rich.

Occasionaly, here and there, some folks are starting to do a little analysis on the facade of the global economy.
