Insider trading conviction of Soros is upheld - Business - International Herald Tribune

PARIS — The highest court in France on Wednesday rejected a bid by George Soros, the billionaire investor, to overturn a conviction for insider trading in a case dating back nearly 20 years, leaving the first blemish on his five-decade investing career.

The panel, the Cour de Cassation, upheld the conviction of Soros, 75, an American citizen, for buying and selling Société Générale shares in 1988 after receiving information about a planned corporate raid on the bank.

Ya, it would encourage the consumers on the private stock markets to place stop-loss orders.

The stock price would quickly fall in on itself, if the public does a good job, before everybody in the company who has the intel can get out.

Also it would reward those in the company who knew about and possibly fostered some sort of new investment if they decide to invest some of their own additional savings at that time.. it could help raise capital internally so they can proceed on their venture.. though I think that is not technically insider trading, but I don't see the difference

Just FYI... specialists on the exchange floor can bring a stock price lower without triggering stop loss orders.

Just FYI... specialists on the exchange floor can bring a stock price lower without triggering stop loss orders.

But with the insider trader selling off in big chunks of stocks -
the move in the price is down -
then triggering more and more of the stop loss orders to be executed -
so more selling . . . yadayadayada, you know the routine.

And . . . once the snowball starts rolling downhill - the short sellers.
Quickly buying back the short by the days end at the even lower price.
I am not sure how good the arguement is that they are doing anything good really . . .
"adding liquidity" to the equity markets.

George Soros is probably even short selling Greece now.
