GOP Logo changed

I read a comment about a week ago on another blog that asserted that the GOP logo had been changed several years ago, where the points in the stars originally pointed upwards, but now point downward. The current GOP logo indeed shows the points downward. But when was it changed and why? Does anybody know?

The stars being inverted is creepy. I wonder if it's a Masonic thing. I had a Masonic friend who said tons of politicians are Masons-- he said Richard Nixon used to use Masonic gestures during his speeches. Any Masons around here who can tell us?
