I'm not religious, and I tire easily of "end times" type talk, but for real, it's hard not to think *something* odd is happening recently.

most are after shocks

The number of strong aftershocks is pretty amazing and continues steadily. At the current rate, another strong earthquake is bound to strike in South America within 15 minutes or so.

Hopefully, the populations of the WHOLE WORLD living in actively seismic areas are on the alert.

Ok, #3 in less than 24 hours? Anyone else really thinking natural occurence is now total bullshit? Or is this close enough to be considered an aftershock?

edit: 2 more quakes at 6.3 or above on USGS

There've been a bunch of these all day. The swath of about 400 miles in Chile/Argentina has seen a whole bunch of aftershocks. It's not about "closeness" but about which plates are involved, the kind of movement, etc.. This isn't that unusual after something of that magnitude.

I again say that it seems odd we haven't heard from any of the major volcanoes in the Pacific Rim area. Mount St. Helens, I'm looking at you.

Another new series of large earthquakes, 6+, have occurred within the past few hours. These earthquakes are within 10-15 miles of the surface. The largest so far is 6.4 near Taiwan. In light of 8.8, 6.4 might not sound powerful, but it is. Chile continues to be a focus as well.

Who's next?

What's next, mass coronal ejections? Don't worry I wont be able to say I told you so.

It could be normal. You'd have to look at a historical timeline to know if something is up or not. I think we often get the impression that "we live in turbulent times" because we have access to 24/7 TV news and 24/7 Internets. This stuff could have been happening 10, 30, and 40 years ago but we were not aware of it.

This is a pretty cool govt site to see listings of the most recent earthquakes.

http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/qed/

" There's a 100 percent chance of an earthquake today. Though millions of persons may never experience an earthquake, they are very common occurrences on this planet. So today -- somewhere -- an earthquake will occur.

It may be so light that only sensitive instruments will perceive its motion; it may shake houses, rattle windows, and displace small objects; or it may be sufficiently strong to cause property damage, death, and injury.

It is estimated that about 700 shocks each year have this capability when centered in a populated area. But fortunately, most of these potentially destructive earthquakes center in unpopulated areas far from civilization.

Since a major portion of the world's earthquakes each year center around the rim of the Pacific Ocean (Ring of Fire), referred to by seismologists as the circum-Pacific belt, this is the most probable location for today's earthquake. But it could hit any location, because no region is entirely free of earthquakes."

Hmm...San Andreas is ready for a big one.

After the tragedy in Chile, I think I'm going to keep an eye on this phenomenon. Thankfully, earthquakes don't really impact me due to my location, but some fair warning on larger earthquakes seems rational. Sure, the frequency of these quakes might lead to the accusation of one crying wolf all the time. So be it. The one time someone in an earthquake prone area doesn't heed warnings might prove foolish.

As far as my approach, I intend to only report a SERIES of 6+ events within a "short" span of time as a indicator of a sustained release of energy within the earth's crust.

The earths axis is shifting.
I'm not sure that it is caused by the quakes as was claimed, or if it is the cause of the quakes.

I expect more.
Glad to live in a safe area. ;)
