Add in Haiti, then look at Yellowstone record number of microquakes a couple weeks ago, something big is happening.

the earth's crust is moving, and comparatively it is big.

2012 came early. Run for the Hills.

Although in all seriousness, I hope the death tolls are small and people stay safe. I ain't sure I believe in God, but I said a prayer just in case.

Sincerely,

Slutter McGee

What are the three? Japan had a quake, and Chile had a quake this morning. It stands to reason that so much shifting around is going to cause shifts in related areas/plates. There were other significant quakes after Haiti, but they really didn't do a lot of damage. There've been big quakes in China (fairly isolated regions).

Since 2/22/10 there have been nine earthquakes over 6.0.

Six of them were in Chili.

One of them was in Argentina.

One of them was in Japan.

One of them was in Tonga Region.

Significant earthquakes in 2010:

Magnitude 8.8 OFFSHORE MAULE, CHILE February 27, 2010
Magnitude 7.0 RYUKYU ISLANDS, JAPAN February 26, 2010
Magnitude 6.9 CHINA-RUSSIA-NORTH KOREA BORDER REGION February 18, 2010
Magnitude 3.8 ILLINOIS February 10, 2010
Magnitude 5.9 OFFSHORE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA February 04, 2010
Magnitude 6.2 BOUGAINVILLE REGION, PAPUA NEW GUINEA February 01, 2010
Magnitude 5.9 HAITI REGION January 20, 2010
Magnitude 4.0 OKLAHOMA January 15, 2010
Magnitude 7.0 HAITI REGION January 12, 2010
Magnitude 6.5 OFFSHORE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA January 10, 2010
Magnitude 4.1 SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA, CALIFORNIA January 07, 2010
Magnitude 6.8 SOLOMON ISLANDS January 05, 2010
Magnitude 7.1 SOLOMON ISLANDS January 03, 2010
Magnitude 6.6 SOLOMON ISLANDS January 03, 2010

Sounds like a crazy conspiracy theory, but now I'm really starting to wonder...

Maybe this wouldnt seem so weird to me if I knew that the number of quakes above 6.0 or so were common. Have any data on the average number of quakes and how right now is currently comparing to global and historical averages?

I just browse the usgs website from time to time. :) I do know there have been periods of increased activity, of course, and I don't mean to say "everything's absolutely normal!" Something is distinctly up, but it's not quite up to earth-ending proportions. The Haiti quake, in particular, was in a very unusual spot. If you look at the list above, you see Oklahoma and Indiana doing a little shaking. Yellowstone's been grumbling for a month or two. Things are shifting, and when one thing moves ----> then it bumps into something else, and creates a gap, and that other plate might move another way to relieve the ensuing pressure, and then another plate could move this way, and so on.

My point was merely that, in a given day/week/month, there are a lot of considerable quakes we don't even hear about.

More info:

HOW RARE IS THIS STRONG A QUAKE?
Magnitudes as strong or stronger than Saturday morning's Chilean quake are very rare.

Since 1900, there have been only four stronger earthquakes measured worldwide. Yes, Chile holds the world record for the strongest quake, a magnitude 9.5 monster in May 1960. This quake's epicenter was not far from Saturday's tremor. Roughly 1600 were killed and 2 million were homeless.

Didn't you hear? The Bilderbergs had a meeting with the CFR and TC last month and a new dictum was whispered around to the CIA to begin to fire up HAARP to cause all of the cold weather storms this season as well as the earthquakes. It's only a matter of time before they turn on the killer satellites to being inflicting EMPs on us which of course they'll blame on solar flares. I can't believe you people don't already know about this... Duh...

Well they got the sand and the sun, but they are a bit lacking on the water.;)

That went right over your head :( After California falls into the ocean, the joke is that Nevada will be beachfront.

Haiti was a 5.9 - pretty common according to these numbers. I guess location depends a lot more as to damaging effect than magnitude. People that build on fault lines...

Kind of reminds me of katrina and the brainchild that decided putting a biowarfare lab behind the levies and below sea level was a good idea....

The main quake in Haiti was a 7.1, I believe, not a 5.9. 5.9 was an aftershock.

It was uncommon for the area (it hadn't had a significant quake in about 200 years).

Haiti disintegrated because their construction sucks :> Their cities pretty much turned to mud and despair after hurricanes, tropical storms, or a strong rain shower.

The depth of the quake tends to be more important than the Richter level. Haiti's quake was so devastating because it was only 2 miles beneath the surface. Chile's quake was 22 miles deep for comparison.
