WASHINGTON – Americans who turn to terrorism and plot against the U.S. are now as big a concern as international terrorists, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Sunday.

The government is just starting to confront this reality and does not have a good handle on how to prevent someone from becoming a violent extremist, she said.

In the last year, Napolitano said, she's witnessed a movement from international extremism to domestic extremism — cases in which Americans radicalized and decided to plot attacks against the country.

"What really is it that draws a young person being raised in the United States to want to go and be at a camp in Yemen and then come back to the United States with the idea of committing harm within the United States?" Napolitano asked without citing specific cases. "Where in that person's formulation is there an opportunity to break that cycle?"

One case is that of Najibullah Zazi, the Denver airport driver who has been charged with plotting to use explosives to attack the U.S.

Born in Afghanistan, Zazi had lived in the U.S. since he was 14 years old. In recent years, prosecutors say, he traveled overseas to receive training from al-Qaida.

Speaking to governors who are in Washington for their annual conference, Napolitano said this problem is one that needs to be drilled down and analyzed.

Napolitano was in a wheelchair Sunday because she broke her ankle playing tennis a few weeks ago, a Homeland Security official said.

John Brennan, President Barack Obama's homeland security adviser, echoed Napolitano's concerns about violent extremism Sunday.

Countering violent extremism is not just a federal issue, Brennan told the governors; it's something that needs to be addressed as a nation.

The White House hosted a meeting to discuss these issues Friday, Brennan said.

"There needs to be community engagement," he said.

Brennan pointed to a case from late last year when five young Pakistani men living in Northern Virginia traveled to Pakistan seeking training from al-Qaida.

The FBI learned of the missing men from their families. After the men disappeared in late November, their families, members of the local Muslim community, sought help from a non-governmental organization, which put them in touch with the FBI.

"It's that engagement with those local communities that's going to be the critically important mechanism to detect that radicalization even before they depart," Brennan said.

The government has been engaged in this sort of outreach for years. Homeland Security officials have periodic meetings with Muslim communities. And FBI agents in certain parts of the country regularly reach out to Muslim communities and leaders.

Being from AZ, let me see if I understand this right. It is OK for the banks, GS, JPM, AIG, CITI, GM, Chrysler, Govt. and the rest to rape pillage from us and she thinks because we are upset we are terrorist? F You Janet, who screwed AZ with your fiasco on alt fuel vehicles.

Remember when you were the GOV. and complaining that the Fed's were not paying for the incarceration of all the illegals and how it was hurting the AZ budget? DUH, but I think they still owe us that 1 B they have never paid.

Are we pissed off? You are damn right. Too bad they did not include a bunch of our family members on just how pissed off we are.

Perhaps, 8 letters is too long; we may just have to break it down into an even smaller sound bite; a single 7-letter word: revenge. ........................hmm, you know, on second thought, I don't think they'll allow themselves to understand this one either.

On second thought, allow me to put my tin foil hat on and speculate.

I'm sure some of them do understand blowback, both domestic and foreign. I imagine that they have considered blowback an acceptable risk. Pursuing their policies is the most important objective, and anything that could possibly stand in the way must be accepted and minimized.

Within my "cone of silence" I would agree. Going even further to say that they not only consider it "an acceptable risk", but a needed component in the pursuit of their policies. But that is just between myself and my "cone of silence." ;)

uh, they not only understand blowback, but they are counting on it. where else are they going to use their new found powers to detain, torture and kill U.S. citizens? Yemen? Iraq? those theaters are too far from the homeland and even though there have been some real losses in domestic civil liberties, there has been just enough resistence to the police state to keep the wolves at bay.

but make no doubt, once we get a few more Joe Stack's flying planes into buildings or similar terror/blowback attacks, all but the most staunch civil-libertarians will shout their mouths out of fear of big brother's repraisal.

domestic blowback is an essential component for installing a 'full-retard' police state. (we're only 'half-retard' imho).

I wonder when the false flag domestic terrorism (manufactured "blow back") is going to start. I betcha it will be soon, like around the same time the proposed legislation is up for consideration in Congress. And of course all the media will fan the flames of fear, including the false-Patriot media, attempting to whip-up a frenzy in order to get the draconian legislation through.

Domestic extremism is top concern....

that was really what it was all about from the beginning, domestic control. People sit around and say how dumb the government is all the time.. they like when you say how dumb they are, it hands them excuses, 'they' plan way into the future.
