SAN CLEMENTE — Authorities have found a grenade on Interstate 5 in Orange County and have shut down the freeway in both directions.

California Highway Patrol Officer Eric Barnard said today that it was unclear whether the grenade in San Clemente was live or inert.

The Sheriff Department's bomb squad and Marines from Camp Pendleton arrived on scene to investigate.

Barnard says the grenade was discovered about 11:15 a.m. and authorities closed the freeway about 15 minutes later.

Motorists are being diverted off the highway at Avenida Vista Hermosa. Traffic is backed up in both directions for at least five miles.

bold by me

Come on now. If it did not go off in 3.5 seconds (10 sec on very old vintage) it is not going to.

How hard is it to see the HOLE in the bottom if an inert / practice grenade?

Are the available EOD personnel that inept?

I mean Damn.

Kick it to the ditch, and open the damn road.

A grenade?

Shit, I'm amazed they didn't put half the state on "lock down".

Oops!

Damn. Quick. Laws need to be passed to make toy grenades distinguishable from real ones. Perhaps make them bright yellow and shaped like bananas.

The shutdown caused a traffic backup of about six miles. Southbound lanes remain closed.

The grenade is under investigation by the U.S. Marine Corps and Homeland Security.

Sorry,
not impressed.

I have owned inert grenades. I have used real ones.
What the @#$% kind of Marine is "investigating".

Is it just more climate of fear, or has stupidity run amok.

The same neurosis is at work when climate fear mongers make everyone deathly scared of cyclical weather changes. In historical context, our ancestors just adapted, today we need to unleash the armies of scientists and politicians under the flag of the UN to stop the weather before it kills us and save the world from evil polluting humans.

For your rolodex - when tossing grenades out of vehicles, hold the grenade out of the window when pulling the pin.

Grenades were always my favorite. I would always volunteer for safety NCO on the grenade range. Some of those guys would be as nervous as an owl covered in shit.

Then when the day was over we would get to play with any in open cases. See who could sling one the farthest and let a few cook-off. A man can do an awful lot of thinking in that 2-3 sec.:D
