The John Birch Society Sets Organizational Meeting Here

A chapter of The John Birch Society is being organized in Ponca City.

The John Birch Society is sponsoring a one-hour program at the Ponca City Public Library Thursday at 7 p.m. This event will include a 28-minute video entitled "Overview of America," as well as a guest speaker, JBS section leader Don Crosson from Oklahoma City.

Since its founding, The John Birch Society has been dedicated to restoring and preserving freedom under the U.S. Constitution. The society is non-political and does not endorse candidates or political parties. The bi-annual Freedom Index is published, indicating the voting records of every member of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate.

Founded by Robert Welch in 1958, the society was named after Captain John Birch, a Baptist missionary and U.S. military intelligence officer in World War II who was killed in 1945 by supporters of the Communist Party of China. Birch's parents joined the society as life members.

With headquarters in Appleton, Wis., the society has local chapters in all 50 states. It owns American Opinion Publishing, which publishes The New American magazine as well as books, pamphlets and other materials. The John Birch Society is incorporated as a non-profit educational institution in the state of Massachusetts.

With an emphasis on limited government and adherence to the Constitution, John Birch Society members are actively using tools such as literature distribution, a speakers bureau, informational meetings, news conferences, e-mail campaigns, and displays at fairs and other events.

Ponca City chapter leader Robert Moore, who first became active 23 years ago in Tulsa County, mentions that The John Birch Society is the largest Americanist organization of its kind. For more than half a century, a national network of local chapters has initiated communications projects and activities in support of personal freedom and limited government. A staff of full-time field coordinators support chapter activity at the local and state levels.

Moore invites residents of Ponca City and Kay County to explore the Web site at www.JBS.org to learn about the work of the society. For more information, he can be reached at 761-4661.
