Ron Paul's stunning straw poll victory

By Yael T. Abouhalkah, Kansas City Star Editorial Page columnist

A conservative group gave Ron Paul a surprising -- and meaningless -- thumbs-up victory in a presidential straw poll Saturday night. So this is the best they can come up with for the 2012 race?

While Paul, a Texas Republican congressman, isn't exactly a household name, the Conservative Political Action Conference attendees in Washington sure loved him.

But let's face it: He's not going to be president.

Paul is mostly known for his ultra-conservative views, such as wanting to get rid of the Fed. He's not in the mainstream -- at all -- of the Republican Party on any number of issues.

That's why many in the crowd Saturday evening booed when they heard Paul had won. Many of these conservatives realize they looked silly giving such a big victory to Paul.

In the poll:

Basically, he's not 'electable' enough. The masses eat this up and let the news networks think for them. If this continues it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

So when The Mittster wins CPAC, it's a defining, bellwether moment. But when Ron Paul wins, it's meaningless?

If Ron Paul's ideas can't win, how is it that Rand Paul is up 19% in the polls?
