Beck: "We got Alaska from the Soviet Union because of its resources???"

not sure if he just misspoke...or is just very uninformed....but we didnt buy Alaska from the "Soviet Union"....we bought Alaska back in 1865 or so from what was then Czarist Russia.

Communists did not overthrow the Czar and establish Soviet Union until 1917...Beck was off by more than 50 years.

Secondly, we didnt buy Alaska for it's "resources" ............ internal combustion engine/cars had not even been invented yet! The purchase of Alaska was ridiculed as "Seward's Folly."

Real reason we probably bought was to payoff the Czar for insuring that England didnt get involved in our civil war.

Beck doesnt know history...he merely regurgitates what his reseraches put together....

thats what I'm thinking. ...Czarist Russia and the Soviet Union are two different worlds. ...and to suggest we boaught Alaska for its "resources" at a time when we didnt use gasoline...and at a time when our own Northwest wasnt even settled....is really bizarre.

just watched a doc on it and it said it was purchased for its timbre and for security purposes militarily.

Imperial Russia had to sell Alaska because they needed money for their war with with Japan that was ongoing in the 1860's.

Seward bought it because he thought the Fur (primarily harbor seal), Whaling (primarily Grey), and Timber (primarily spruce used for ship masts) resources would be sufficiently valuable. Gold had not been discovered in Alaska at that time, nor had oil.
