It seems ever since I donated to Ron Paul's presidential campaign in 2008 I get all sorts of emails, phone calls and junk mail asking me to donate to some cause. The most irritating calls are the ones from John Cornyn's NRSC. On the people making the calls are nice enough. And I have no problem with the goal of overturning the democratic majority in the senate. I do have a problem with the fact that Cornyn voted for the bailout. I think that should disqualify him from running the NRSC effort but that's my personal opinion. Those who call on his behalf are quick to point out how he supposedly has the "3rd most conservative voting" record in the senate. Well if voting for a massive bailout that set the stage for a socialist (or fascist depending on your perspective) takeover of or financial system qualifies as "conservative", some people need to recalibrate their criteria. I don't know why the GOP can't find politicians who didn't vote for the bailout to lead out. (In the senate Jim Demint, Richard Shelby and Jeff Sessions come to mind. I might not agree with those 3 on everything, but at least they opposed the bailout.)

But if that wasn't bad enough, I later found out that John Cornyn donated money to KY senatorial candidate Trey Grayson. Now I'm new to being active in politics. But if you're going to call my house asking me to help the republcans win the senate in Novemeber why on earth are you involving yourself in a contested republican primary? So I was looking forward to the next NRSC all. Here's how it went:

Solicitor: Is this John Drake?

Me: Yes it is. Who's calling?

Solicitor: I'm calling on behalf National Republican Senatorial Committee. As you know we have a real chance to take back the senate in November and we'd like to ask for your help.

Me: Is this the outfit run by John Cornyn?

Solicitor: Yes it is.

Me: I have a message I want you to give Mr. Cornyn.

Solicitor: Why certainly. I can pass it on.

Me: I think it's wrong for your organization to be involved in primary elections. You want to win back the senate in November? Well you should let primary elections play out. Let the candidates fight it out without interference and let the best candidate win. I'm particularly upset that John Cornyn donated to Trey Grayson, who I don't even think is a conservative, when Grayson is running against a real conservative Rand Paul. Cornyn should have stayed out of that and I'm very angry that he didn't.

Solicitor: That's a candidate running in your state?

Me: No. Rand Paul is running for senate in Kentucky. His father is Ron Paul who ran for president in 2008 and I voted for him.

Solicitor: Oh that's right. I see. Well I have to say that this was paid for by (blah...blah...blah....) and have a good evening sirn.

Me: You have a good evening too.

My....that felt good.
