The Department of Commerce announced this week a proposal for the creation of a new global warming office. Ironically, blizzard conditions (snowmageddon (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100206/ap_on_re_us/us_winter_weather)) in Washington D.C. forced it to hold its press conference on the subject over the phone instead of at the National Press Club as originally planned.

“By providing critical planning information that our businesses and our communities need, NOAA Climate Service will help tackle head-on the challenges of mitigating and adapting to climate change,” claimed Commerce Secretary Gary Locke. “In the process, we'll discover new technologies, build new businesses and create new jobs.”

The unconstitutional global warming office and its new website climate.gov would be charged with propagandizing Americans with eco-alarmism, and, as the press release that announced the proposal explained: “provide the scientific foundation for extensive on-the-ground climate services.” The operation will be part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and will supposedly “consolidate” everything related to global warming under one roof.

The press release, entitled ‘Commerce Department Proposes Establishment of NOAA Climate Service (http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2010/20100208_climate.html),’ also quoted a wide array of interested parties who support the new office.

“NOAA has consistently led the world in climate research and observation,” claimed global warming czar Carol Browner, who before joining the Obama administration held (http://www.thenewamerican.com/index.php/usnews/politics/679) a leadership seat on Socialist International’s Commission for a Sustainable World Society and served on the board of APX, a company that deals with “carbon offset credits” and “emission allowances.”

“Businesses, communities and governments will rely even more on its expertise and the critical information it provides to make informed decisions based on the best science available,” she said. “Through NOAA’s improved climate services we will be better able to confront climate change, and the many challenges it presents for our environment, security, and economy.”

Another proponent of NOAA’s climate office scheme is Duke Energy boss Jim Rogers, a long-time supporter of a government cap-and-tax swindle. “Addressing climate change is one of our most pressing environmental challenges. Making climate science more easily accessible to all Americans will help us gain the consensus we need to move forward,” he said. “The new NOAA Climate Service is a welcome addition. It will help bring people together so we can also bring about an economic recovery by more rapidly modernizing our nation’s energy infrastructure.” So in other words, he likes the idea because he thinks it will help get everybody on board the global warming band wagon.

But despite claims that “decision-makers across widely diverse sectors” are increasingly demanding “climate change” information, the new office was obviously not proposed in response to popular demand amongst the citizenry. A recent Pew Foundation poll (http://people-press.org/report/485/economy-top-policy-priority) found that Americans place combating "global warming” in last place on their list of concerns. Less than half of Americans even believe global warming is happening, according to a recent CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey (http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/12/07/global.warming.poll/index.html). A cynic might even say that is the real reason why government thinks the nation needs a new global warming office.

“More and more, Americans are witnessing the impacts of climate change in their own backyards, including sea-level rise, longer growing seasons, changes in river flows, increases in heavy downpours, earlier snowmelt and extended ice-free seasons in our waters,” the release stated matter-of-factly. “People are searching for relevant and timely information about these changes to inform decision-making about virtually all aspects of their lives.” Read that again: “decision-making about virtually all aspects of their lives.”

The office still needs to obtain a congressional committee green light, but Congress is filled with global warming alarmists so this will likely represent merely a small hurdle. "This service will be a vital part of our growing body of knowledge on climate change, and will be held to the highest standards of scientific integrity and transparency," claimed Democratic Representative Edward Markey, the chairman of a House global warming committee. At the United Nations’ COP15 global warming summit in Copenhagen last year, Markey told The New American (http://www.thenewamerican.com/index.php/world-mainmenu-26/europe-mainmenu-35/2674-cheers-and-jeers-at-copenhagens-climate-conference) magazine that the U.S. government should work with Communist China towards “solving” climate change, despite the regime’s calls for global population control and more wealth redistribution.

The record-breaking cold sweeping the nation, in addition to messing up the climate change press conference plans, has prompted a wave of propaganda pieces aimed at convincing Americans that the blizzards are also due to global warming. But judging by readers responses on articles like ‘Snowstorm: East Coast Blizzard Tied to Climate Change (http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1962294,00.html)’ from Time magazine, people aren’t buying it. Perhaps readers remember that just a few decades ago, that same publication issued dire warnings about “global cooling.”

The last thing America needs is another unconstitutional bureaucracy to devour scarce resources — especially one dedicated to convincing people of the false notion that human progress is bad for the planet. This new office, if approved, will simply serve as another establishment mouth piece for the government to promote its agenda: more power, global taxes and regulation of everything.

Combined with the Environmental Protection Agency’s finding (http://www.jbs.org/jbs-news-feed/5827-epa-regulations-vs-freedom-and-prosperity) that plant food (http://bit.ly/bBUdRU) is actually a dangerous pollutant, the global warming alarmists are steadily making progress toward their goals — even despite Climategate (http://www.thenewamerican.com/index.php/tech-mainmenu-30/environment/2589-climate-teacup-tempest) and the fact that America is experiencing record low temperatures and massive snow fall. With any luck, the blizzards will hold them up for a little while longer. But if sanity is to prevail, freedom-minded Americans must get involved.
