The exciting news from the campaign trail as of Friday is that John Hostettler’s volunteers have succeeded in collecting more than enough signatures in each of the nine Congressional districts to make him eligible for the ballot in the upcoming Republican primary election for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Evan Bayh.
In an effort reminiscent to Hostettler’s six successful U.S. House of Representatives campaigns, a large army of real people came out to do the groundwork necessary to gather 500 signatures in each district. The numbers in each district are actually far greater than that and by the time Mr. Hostettler officially files his candidacy next week, he should be by far the leading Republican signature-gatherer. While there are no style points for having more signatures, it is one sign of statewide support and certainly is not a bad way to spread name recognition and understanding of the candidate. The vigor and dedication of the hundreds of volunteers (volunteers don’t get paid) to help in this effort has been very impressive.
And that’s happening on a regular basis. Hoosiers are coming up to Mr. Hostettler at events around the state and identifying with his thoughtful, principled stands and underlying allegiance to our Constitution and limited government. Economic responsibility, an America-first defense and foreign policy and faith and family-friendly positions that protect life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are the stances that John has been proclaiming to people in Indiana and the message is resonating loud and clear.
At recent Lincoln Day meetings in Indianapolis, new supporters young and old have been expressing their support for the campaign. While the interest in voting Evan Bayh out of office is great, the energy and enthusiasm existing around the state, for long-time Republicans and freedom-loving independents that are making their voices heard through various organizations or on their own, is increasing daily. This support echoes what John has been experiencing in other parts of the state.
In some ways the next phase of the campaign has already begun. You should look for a Hostettler for Senate event in an area near you as John crisscrosses the state to get the message of Constitutional government to Indiana voters.
