The exciting news from the campaign trail as of Friday is that John Hostettler’s volunteers have succeeded in collecting more than enough signatures in each of the nine Congressional districts to make him eligible for the ballot in the upcoming Republican primary election for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Evan Bayh.

In an effort reminiscent to Hostettler’s six successful U.S. House of Representatives campaigns, a large army of real people came out to do the groundwork necessary to gather 500 signatures in each district. The numbers in each district are actually far greater than that and by the time Mr. Hostettler officially files his candidacy next week, he should be by far the leading Republican signature-gatherer. While there are no style points for having more signatures, it is one sign of statewide support and certainly is not a bad way to spread name recognition and understanding of the candidate. The vigor and dedication of the hundreds of volunteers (volunteers don’t get paid) to help in this effort has been very impressive.

And that’s happening on a regular basis. Hoosiers are coming up to Mr. Hostettler at events around the state and identifying with his thoughtful, principled stands and underlying allegiance to our Constitution and limited government. Economic responsibility, an America-first defense and foreign policy and faith and family-friendly positions that protect life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are the stances that John has been proclaiming to people in Indiana and the message is resonating loud and clear.

At recent Lincoln Day meetings in Indianapolis, new supporters young and old have been expressing their support for the campaign. While the interest in voting Evan Bayh out of office is great, the energy and enthusiasm existing around the state, for long-time Republicans and freedom-loving independents that are making their voices heard through various organizations or on their own, is increasing daily. This support echoes what John has been experiencing in other parts of the state.

In some ways the next phase of the campaign has already begun. You should look for a Hostettler for Senate event in an area near you as John crisscrosses the state to get the message of Constitutional government to Indiana voters.

That's a coincidence because my school republican's club just sent out an email stating that they are collecting signatures for Dan Coats at two dollars a name. Too bad he can't get people to do it for free.

Do they know about Hostettler? Coats will never beat Bayh, he's more establishment than most of the members of Congress.

The way I hear it, Coats has lots of "establishment" clout - and presumably, cash - behind him. I imagine the Republican powers that be are just about as excited about having Hostettler win as they are about Rand Paul.

Yes.

he needs to get the website up to scratch and start going harder

That's a good reason to donate to his campaign. He needs money quick so he can spend it on quality staff and a high quality website, among other things. But he's always depended heavily on grassroots, and run very lean campaigns. So an expensive senate race is not what he's used to.

This one democrat is closing in on enough signatures. It would be good if she got enough because she would automatically be the nominee. And she's a nobody.

If anyone is in Indiana (especially 8th district/Hostettler's old on) they need signatures.

Signature form is here: http://ow.ly/17yRC

Turn into county clerk's office by noon tomorrow.

What is the story behind this?

- In 1998, John Hostettler traveled to Moscow as part of a Congressional delegation to discuss U.S. deployment of a national missile defense system with members of the Russian Duma

Is Hostettler for or against US deployment of a "national" missile defense system on foreign soil?

Look at his positions now, look at his votes with Ron Paul where it was 433-2.

Hostettler isn't perfect by any means, but he's definitely one of the best candidates running across the country.

I don't blame you if that's a deal breaker. We also have money bombs and threads for Rand and Schiff, who also aren't spotless when it comes to war on terror stuff. But I think when you look at Hostettler's complete voting record, he's in a class with them, or if not, then pretty darn close.
http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?t=222752

He was one of 6 Republicans to vote against authorization to invade Iraq, a vote he feels strongly enough about that he has written an anti-Iraq war book. He also voted against the creation of the Dept. of Homeland Security. He represented the noninterventionist position in the "What is a conservative foreign policy?" debate at CPAC last year. He voted against making regime change in Iraq official US policy when Clinton was president. He voted against Clinton's interventions in Kosovo. He sponsored bills to defund the UN and get out of the WTO. He has explicitly stood out against the bellicose rhetoric other politicians have been using against Iran in recent years. Plus he has a great record on domestic issues. He's not a Ron Paul clone. But he's far better than anyone currently in the senate, bar none. He's not just a lesser-of-two-evils milquetoast Republican. He's a principled, anti-establishment, noninterventionist, constitutionalist.

Voted NO on allowing electronic surveillance without a warrant. (Sep 2006

Voted NO on authorizing military force in Iraq. (Oct 2002)
Voted YES on disallowing the invasion of Kosovo. (May 1999)

He doesn't look horrible by any means at all. Perfect should not be made the enemy of the good. He's far far far better than Coats, and will be a huge ally of DeMint and Rand in the Senate.

That's right. And if you want to make comparisons, if Demint is the best we have in the Senate now, then Hostettler would be a big improvement over him, and would be in a class right there with Rand.

Maybe he has reconsidered his support of the patriot act?

I honestly don't know. I would love to hear him address that. But part of me thinks it would be better to get through the Republican primary first.
