A proposal that would ban late-night TV ads showing half-naked young women is advancing in the Senate — again

The measure sponsored by Democratic Sen. Doug Jackson of Dickson failed the last two legislative sessions. But it passed the Senate Commerce Committee on Tuesday 8-0, with one abstention.

The companion bill is scheduled to be heard by the Criminal Practice and Procedure Subcommittee next week.

The measure unanimously passed the Senate about two years ago, but died in a House subcommittee that same year and the one after.


Jackson has said he got the idea for the proposal after seeing partially censored commercials for "Girls Gone Wild" videos that show young women disrobing and acting out other sexual situations.

When I used to watch TV BRP (Before Ron Paul [08]) those stupid ads would annoy me.

As stupid as they may be, it should be the station owners rights. If they want to show naked bloody sex, that's their choice, it may drive away most of their sane viewers and be bad for buisiness, but hey it's their choice.

Selling our airwaves to rich Hollywood porn makers isn't what the FCC is supposed to do.

The FCC has failed to ensure public spectrum is used for the public good.

The FCC is not good to begin with.

It is not the government's job to police the media.

If you don't like what a channel is showing on their media, don't watch it, simple as that. That's the free market approach.

Agree - found the ads annoying. Then again, I find most infomercials annoying.

Are these things still arround? Heard the producer filmed some girl taking a shower and put it on one of his tapes. Turns out he forgot to ask for ID and she was 17... IIRC. Thought he went to jail and the ads went away after that.

It's been the same commercial for like 8 years, those girls probably have husbands and kids by now. Maybe Doug Jackson is married to one. :D

I hate those commercials, but I think there are other better ways of getting rid of them other than politics.

The FCC is prima facia unconstitutional.

The spectrum was actually homesteaded and there were frequency "owners" until the feds came into play.

No the government owns the spectrum and those that are politically connected are allowed to lease the space from the government. A clear usurpation of power.

Well...technically Doug Jackson isn't a member of congress and sex isn't speech. You might not find GGW obscene, but states have had the continuous right to regulate this area since the founding of the republic.

I noticed a few other commericals in my area started using island starting music in their commericals. I hear the infamous chime and think I'm in for a treat of semi-naked blocked out girls, but I get some commerical for some cheap restaurant. THAT, should be banned.

That's all true.

But when you're a rich Hollywood (Mormon), under the Double Standards Act, the rules are just magically somehow different for you.

It's almost as if GGW is making money for the 'right' people and will be allowed to dump porn ads all over the public's airwaves, regardless of the public's desires and even despite the criminal acts of their sex-offender founder.
