Trash and recycling truck drivers can add one extra responsibility to their list of job duties. Besides keeping the streets clean, police hope they may be able to help keep them safe too.

Law enforcement agencies are joining forces with Waste Management to train trash-haulers on reporting suspicious activity and potential emergency situations.

"The drivers some of them have been on their route 20 and 30 years. They go places every day that law enforcement never sees," said Les Hart (http://www.nbcsandiego.com/topics?topic=Les+Hart) from Waste Management. "They know what light is supposed to be on, what door is supposed to be closed, that little red car is always there. When something is amiss they really know, they have a gut feeling. "

San Diego (http://www.nbcsandiego.com/topics?topic=San+Diego), El Cajon (http://www.nbcsandiego.com/topics?topic=El+Cajon) and the Santee (http://www.nbcsandiego.com/topics?topic=Santee) police departments worked with drivers saying they can be extra eyes and ears for law enforcement.

They should contact all of the local line clearance crews also.
Tree trimmers are good at finding meth labs.

Convenience store clerks have a knack for telling what customers are stoned also.
Might want to enlist them as well.

Cable television technicians are invited into peoples homes every day.
Maybe they should get in on the act, no telling what they see on peoples computers when they are doing a modem call.

Nobody knows a neighborhood like the water meter ladies. If you want Intel, that's who you need to talk to.
They know exactly who is doing who.

Don't forget the dog catcher.
Probable cause on the fly right there.
Saw a cat in the back yard, figured I better take a look.

Elderly Wal Mart greeters might be interested in making a little supplemental income and in this economy I imagine a lot of them are losing hours if not their job. Old people see more than you think and as a stationary Intel gatherer they are second to none at 360 degrees from the front door and back happenings.

I feel safer...and I hate my neighbors (well most of them). Is there a hot line?

Coming in at Number one on the countdown.
Your kids.
They know everything you do and are easily accessible for download from school.
DARE alone for example has sent many an unsuspecting law breaker to court.
Imagine the Intel capability of this virtually untapped Intel resource.
Remember the scene from 1984?
The little Hitlers in the hall?
We are procreating our own prosecutors.

Look under G in the phone book.
