Edit: All 50 states are complete!

1588 Groups

http://bit.ly/9eLp8u

Red = Campaign for Liberty / Ron Paul

Green = Libertarian organizations

Yellow = Tea Party and 9/12

Blue = College/University Groups

How I found the groups:

1) Went to Meetup (www.meetup.com) and searched a bunch of zipcodes for the keyword "liberty."

2) Added all of the student organizations on Students for Liberty's website: http://studentsforliberty.org/college/groups/

3) Young Americans for Liberty Chapters: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UT...4&source=embed

-I am in talks with a programmer who will make the map more dynamic and intuitive. I have setup a Chipin with a goal of $300, to pay him for his time and effort: http://libertymap.chipin.com/liberty-map Please donate if you are able!

http://widget.chipin.com/widget/id/043ce411199713f5

-I will also be securing a domain name in the next week or so - at the moment we are thinking www.FreedomAtlas.com which would incorporate the theme of "Atlas Shrugged" into the design.

Bump - might be able to move this to Forum Feedback, but I feel it's relevant to grassroots activism.

Alright - I think it would be a good idea to use a Google map setup to organize this....it would be helpful to have one person in each state who coordinates that state's organizations. That person would be responsible for (1) Collecting information on the meetups and organizations in their state; (2) Adding new groups to the map in a timely manner (hopefully updating the map at least once a month); (3) Occasionally checking on the health of the organizations that are listed, in order to delete those that are no longer active (thereby keeping the list current and clutter-free).

I think this thread could be used as a valuable resource for anyone who wants to post organizations and meetups that they are aware of, and it would be good to have volunteers from each state to handle the tasks outlined above. I'll volunteer to take care of Virginia - anyone else want to step up for this? :)

(Thanks to Krippy for doing the initial setup, I was pretty illiterate when it comes to Google maps.)

I like it. Once someone starts up one for a state we can move and sticky the post into the state sub-forum, and link to it from this thread...

I'm thinking that we can incorporate them all into one map, just so it's all in one place - if you live close to the state line, you don't have to go through two links. The less hassle = the more likely a person is going to get involved.

I've gone through Meetup and done the best I could to find all of the active groups in Virginia that I could:

Green = Libertarian organizations

Yellow = Tea Party and 9/12

How I came up with my list for Virginia:

1) Went to Meetup (www.meetup.com) and searched a bunch of zipcodes for the keyword "liberty."

2) Added all of the student organizations on Students for Liberty's website: http://studentsforliberty.org/college/groups/

3) http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=100709430775999660615.000459c7d0c3b3691c95f&ll=38.479395,-97.03125&spn=27.419632,61.523438&z=4&source=embed

Any others? Let me know if you'd like to get involved on this and take care of a state.

Added to the list of sources.

Please help if you're able....if you can take a state, the maintenance would be maybe once a month going through the list to ensure that they are all still active, and having your e-mail address available so that group organizers could contact you to have their groups added.

It would be good to be able to group/filter the groups that appear on the map - for example, if there was a structure on the left-hand side that had drop-down "tree" type menus to group/filter by organization (C4L, JBS, LP, YAL, 912, etc.) and/or by main issue (gun rights, free speech, national debt, foreign policy, etc.) and/or by state. I was somewhat trying to categorize the data points by marker type to achieve the same effect. Not sure if there's an easy way to do that using Google Maps, but maybe someone else can guide me on this?

I'll collect all of the data into a spreadsheet tomorrow so that they can be more accessible for use in other areas.... :)

Looks like this "hierarchical" organization is available in Google Earth...having trouble importing it onto Google maps so that the structure shows up.... :confused:

Bump - hoping someone who knows Google Maps a little better can help me with this. (Or, if there's no way to do what I'm trying to do, an alternative program....but it seems like if this can be done in Earth, it would translate over into Maps).

Plan on having the whole northeast done tonight....trying to get in 6 states a day (really not as hard as it sounds), to finish up by the end of this week.

Much appreciated! I'll make use of that when I get to Ohio. :)

Unfortunately, the work so far is very disorganized and heavy-handed - putting in placemarks for these places without any logical structure to them. If I find a good way to organize all the points and create menus, I'll implement that....still trying to find someone who's familiar with it.

I think this can be a valuable resource!

Update:

As of 7:42 EDT 2/26/2010 -

23 1/2 states completed (in the middle of doing Florida right now)

655 groups mapped

In the process of striking a deal with a liberty-friendly programmer to create the intuitive, hierarchical structure on the left side to search these groups...

Any ideas for domain names? I think this is worthy of its own domain. :)

I appreciate the support Dirt :) I'll continue to keep this thread current....I hadn't updated the map in about a week and was contemplating giving up on it prior to going to CPAC, but being around so many activists has re-energized and inspired me. My goal is to have this thing done in another 2-3 weeks....there are other sources that I'm not pulling from (such as Yahoo Groups) that I will use as supplements once a base listing is complete and we can get this thing published to someplace where it can gain more exposure.

do we want to share this with everyone?...

do we want to share this with everyone?...

Well, we certainly want to get it out to our circles, I would think. RPF, Daily Paul, JBS, Libertarian groups, etc. Should we actively promote it to the mainstream Republican? Maybe not. But should it be easily accessible for any wanderers who want to figure out how to get involved, for people who are stumbling upon our ideas and want to participate? Absolutely!

Anyway, we'll see how the entire project evolves - right now, I'm in the "plug and chug" phase of getting the thing filled out. The marketing/strategy can be figured out later. :)

Here's the plan going forward:

-I am in talks with a programmer who will make the map more dynamic and intuitive. I will setup a Chipin tonight and post it here in this thread, with a goal of $300 or so, to pay him for his time and effort.

-I will also be securing a domain name in the next week or so - if you have a suggestion for a domain name, please post it!

Thanks to everyone for the support, it's been a long month and a half but well worth it as far as I'm concerned. :)

Thanks to tkubic46 and MelissaWV for coming up with this suggestion for the domain name: www.FreedomAtlas.org

Secondarily, I can't figure out how to donate to my own Chipin - Paypal won't accept a donation to my own account. I want to throw $50 towards it to get the ball rolling, but I can't figure it out...so if you can help me figure that out, it would go a long way :D
