A woman who says she is upset about the direction the country has taken has upset veterans and service members with her protest. She's flying the American flag upside down outside her Fort Worth business.
Barry Leonard saw the flag as he was driving home.
“Too many of us fought and died for that flag and it’s very offensive flying it upside down,” Leonard said.
The upside down flag, which is a signal of distress, is a political protest by the president of Cantwell Power Solutions.
“I think that our country is in distress like the flag code says. We are headed down a path toward socialism. The debt that this president is running up is never to be paid back,” said Cynthia Benton.
Benton is right about the flag code.
It does define when the American flag can be flown upside down.
“The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property,” it states.
But Leonard wasn’t seeing the extreme danger so he confronted Benton in her office.
“Yeah, but there’s other ways to go about it. I don’t agree with what Washington’s doing either but I don’t agree with the flag flying upside down,” he said.
Benton made it clear, President Obama isn’t the only one she’s blaming.
“George Bush was not a conservative. I just think Obama is compounding what George Bush started and there’s just no reason for it,” she said.
Benton said she got the idea for her protest while listening to the radio. She hopes more people will do the same.
"I just think it will be a sign of solidarity amongst those of us who see that we need to be going in a different direction and take our country back," she said.
