Welcome to the forums! I'm in Lynchburg, glad you posted.

If you live in VA-5, check out Michael McPadden, a good liberty/constitutional candidate running in the GOP primary: http://mcpaddenforcongress.com

If you live in VA-6, I'm not sure if there's a good candidate (maybe someone else can help me out, but I haven't seen one). If you're close enough to the cutoff, consider volunteering for McPadden's campaign. :)

I'm actually the Campaign Manager for the Libertarian Candidate Stuart Bain in the 6th district. We should definitely meet up sometime.

Msmccain and I are both involved with running liberty minded groups at Liberty University. We communicate in person on a daily basis. We definitely need to meet up with liberty supporters that live in this area. Bain's campaign in the 6th will be very interesting. Mcpadden also needs help in the 5th.

Color me interested in Bain's campaign - I don't know a lot about Goodlatte, can anyone give me the scoop on his voting record and reasons he shouldn't be elected? I would do it myself, but I'm heading to work in a few minutes....if I don't get a response, I'll check it out this afternoon.

I think Goodlatte's one of those Republicans that people see as not so bad. I used to live in the 6th.....He may be a tough out. If you check his issues site, it's pretty bland and vague and he keeps it that way for a reason. He sounds like an "everyman" who appeals to anyone.

Military/National Defense
Daniel Webster once said, “God grants liberty only to those who love it and are always ready to guard and defend it.” These words appropriately describe our brave men and women in uniform who have put their lives on the line for our nation. They serve on aircraft carriers in distant oceans, keep the peace on volatile borders, patrol the skies of international hot spots, and their work is difficult and often very dangerous. Theirs is a service marked by humility and born of a love of country, and is of the utmost importance in preserving the very freedoms that we hold dear. I remain committed to ensuring the U.S. military has the necessary resources to keep them ready to overcome any challenge.

He also scored a moderate 60% on the Freedom index, which put him 10 points under Virgil Goode who I think was considered a Liberty candidate at one time.

Goodlatte supports ban on online gambling. He has sponsored and co-sponsored various anti-gambling laws.

So there is the issue of his voting record, he constantly votes for funding of scientific research, had the appalachian regional development act of 1965 amended to include most of his district to redistribute tax dollars from around the country to his area, and he sponsored the Ban on internet gambling... He has also lacked any semblance of leadership in the house, he was not being vocal and standing up to the dems, he wasn't looking out for his district. He just takes commands from the RNC and sits pretty. He is NOT a statesman, the Republic is not his concern. He only looks to be re-elected, and that is not what we want. He promised to spend only 10 years in DC... a promise that is now 17 years old. This is just an "at a glance" list...

I'll send you a PM to make sure you see this Todd (and I'm not sure if you're in charge of the Meetup) -

Is there any way the first meeting can be changed to a different day/time? McPadden is participating in a debate at Brookville HS in Lynchburg at the exact same date/time, and I'd like to be able to attend both...

I agree with msmccain's summary of Goodlatte. Until we have a better candidate to run against him, I only marginally support him. Why? Because of all of the above, he's easy to manipulate with a few angry phone calls, emails, and letters. When he hears angry responses from his constituents, he definitely responds. Of course, this could always work the other way. We need a better congressman for the 6th.

I'll try to change the meetup time. I wasn't real happy with the one we picked anyway.

I will also try to recruit some more members for the meetup. If you want to support a place in Lynchburg where the owner is like minded I suggest the White Hart down town as a possible meeting place. Also, about a new candidate. Stuart Bain is the guy for the job, I wouldn't be working for him if I didn't believe it. You see, I worked on Bob's campaign against Rasoul in 08. I did that because he was the better candidate, this is no longer the case. I can go into more about the candidate at the meet up, and I will probably start a thread for him in the coming weeks.

The 5th District is a bit of a toss up; heres hoping McPadden gets the nomination; but if it goes as I expect and Robert Hurt gets the nod there is a backup plan.

I'm working to ballot qualify Small Business owner Jeff Clark as an Independent and backup just in the case of Hurt winning the nomination; if McPadden wins Clark has said he will drop out of the race.

If anyone is interested in helping out; just as a backup plan; I've got petition forms with his info.

Even with Obama's coat tails helping in 2008, Sam Rasoul (D) could only get 36.6% of the vote in Virginia's 6th. Bob Goodlatte (R) still took 61.6% and a landslide victory in a decidedly Democrat Party year.

Goodlatte's economic votes are pretty solid for mainstream candidates. Even if some claim he's just following RNC orders in the 111th Congress, he can cite his anti-TARP votes during the 110th on bills submitted by a Republican president and cast some doubt on the "following-orders" charge. Goodlatte has also introduced a balanced budget amendment (H.J.RES.1) and a bill to scrap the 1986 tax code and replace it with something else TBD (HR.982). Both have triple-digit co-sponsors (http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/?&Db=d111&querybd=@FIELD(FLD003+@4((@1(Rep+Goodlatte++Bob))+ 00446))).

Goodlatte's anti-gambling position is a marginal issue and he won't lose any votes because of it. Same goes for pork. If he has any weakness at all from a liberty POV, it's his pro-war position. Unfortunately, even the self-labeled progressives here in the 6th are either pro-war or indifferent to it. There isn't much anti-war sentiment to speak of (readers of this forum excepted, of course).

Bain is against unconstitutional wars as per his C4L survey (http://bainforcongress.org/2010/02/05/campaign-for-liberty-candidate-survey/#more-129), but that doesn't make him anti-war or non-interventionist, it just means he respects the law as written in the US Constitution. Hopefully he comes out with a strong anti-war/non-interventionist position to help distinguish his campaign from Goodlatte's.

Realistically, Bain is carrying the burden of a third party label without the benefit of earth-shattering differences in platform. Unless the Dems fail to field a candidate, Bain will probably end up in single digit percentages on election day. If the Dems don't show up in the 6th, as has happened in 2000, 2002, 2004, and 2006, Bain will probably see double-digit percentages, but in a district that heavily identifies with the Republican Party, it will take a serious change in the hearts and minds of local voters to remove Bob Goodlatte.

This isn't to say anyone should give up. A ground ball to the third baseman is probably an out, but we run out the ground balls because anything can happen. Even if it's only successful 1% of the time. I'll be supporting Bain this year and hoping for the best.

Thanks for the response CJM. Bain is definitely a non-interventionist, we are launching a full website in the near future and we will have the full list of issues and stances. At this point in time the buzz about the dems is that there is no candidate has happened in the past. The anti-Bob vote is 20-35% usually. We shall see what we can take from Bob as far as the pro-liberty voters in the district.

I want to apologize to all those that were expecting the CFL meetup to pick up in Lynchburg. I promoted it pretty hard not knowing that it would never occur.

Don't know what has happened with it and have seen no traffic on any happenings. If anyone has information on when or if they will meet please post here or PM.

thanks

we Virginians have work to do; we led this nation in 1775; the final battle in 1781 took place on our soil under the direction of one of our sons......it was one of our sons who first led this nation from the "White House" and 3 others would follow him; in the early days of this nation. It was a Son of Virginia that wrote the Declaration of Independence and a Son of Virginia that is the father of the Constitution; these other states are killing us in regards to the freedom movement; how much more are we going to take laying down; up Virginia and to your post.

Edit: I was feeling patriotic so I wrote that little statement.....killing time at 3:30 am will do things to you!

The C4L meeting did not occur. If you want to get plugged in with that crowd I suggest the LU YAL/SFL/College Libertarians group that meets every thursday at 6pm on campus or the Lynchburg Area LP that meets on the second monday of the month at famous anthony's on 221 at 6:30.

RP4EVER come up to the 6th and help out! B4C would love to have you as a volunteer. If you can't make it up please send ppl here: http://bainforcongress.org/contribute/ to contribute!

Yeah. His federal budget and tax page doesn't even begin to address the main issues.
Anyone not taking seriously the overall spending of the federal budget, isn't viable IMO.

Too bad I'm in the 5th. Would love a guy like this to take on Periello.
The 6th district is pretty screwy the way it's been drawn, leaving out everyone between Roanoke and Lynchburg.

Bain's issues page at his site needs some major work at selling his stances.

bump.

Just got a letter from the campaign in the mail with Petition for Qualified Voters attached. If you don't remember this fiasco....many states have very restrictive guidelines on getting candidates on the ballot.

Bottom line is if Ron Paul doesn't get signatures to the State Board of Elections, 1100 Bank Street, 1st Floor, Richmond, VA 23219-3642 no later than 5:00 p.m. by Thursday, December 22, 2011, he doesn't get on the Republican primary ballot.

I think the number is about 10,000 in the state of virginia and must have 1,000 from each voting district. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Anyone know who our liasion is in Virginia for this?
