Pa. Lawmaker Urges GOP Leaders to Host Debate Before Backing a Gubernatorial Candidate

by KYW's Tony Romeo

A Berks County, Pa. lawmaker running for governor is asking Pennsylvania Republican party leaders to host a debate before endorsing a candidate in the race.

Speaking at a Pennsylvania Press Club luncheon, Berks County Republican Representative Sam Rohrer (photo) – apparently alluding to Attorney General Tom Corbett – said Republicans are no longer interested in a candidate for governor “just because he has greater name ID or because he happens to be ahead in fund-raising at a given moment in time. He challenged party leaders to hold a debate before they officially get behind a candidate:

“Invite the public to watch. Use the resources of our party in a way that promotes our principles: competition, choice, free enterprise. Ask each of us the tough questions.”

Rohrer is perhaps best known for advocating a plan to replace school property taxes with an expanded sales tax.

Another Republican candidate for governor, Congressman Jim Gerlach, dropped out of the race earlier this month.
