Republican gubernatorial candidate Sam Rohrer appealed to state Republican Party leaders today for a party-sponsored, televised debate between he and Attorney General Tom Corbett before the state GOP committee makes its statewide endorsements next month.
Rohrer, a state representative from Berks County, said such a debate would give rank-and-file Republicans a window on the process and let them "see the menu before you recommend a single entree."
Rohrer, a leader of fiscal conservatives in the state House, has centered his underdog race against Corbett on the argument that he is the authentic conservative in the primary, a message he believes is resonating around the state.
Rohrer's underfunded campaign would greatly benefit from any free media exposure between now and primary day.
A spokesman for the Republican State Committee did not address the unusual request for a debate, saying only that plans for the party's Feb. 13 endorsement meeting are still being finalized.
Efforts to reach Corbett's campaign were not successful.
