It's pretty common actually. I know at least a couple of people in the natural health community do it.

This is typical in these types of industries.

Record labels, publishers, etc often "buy" thousands of copies of their own books/albums in order to say they've sold a lot. Then they turn around and resell those to the distributors. This is the first thing they teach you in college marketing :p

If you read the article, that isn't what it actually says.

The books were autographed and used as rewards for people donating $100 or more to the SarahPAC. And the commentary is sourced from a conversation between Olbermann and Huffington, yeah they are trustworthy. Dishonest reporting fail.

I noticed they neglect to mention that almost all politicians do exactly the same thing. Lieberman in particular comes to mind. They buy the books to send out to supporters who donate more than a certain amount.
