View Full Version : Obama's budget - the good, the bad and the facepalm

Just a few highlights here:

The good - overhauling no child left behind, with an emphasis on changing standards of how shools are doing and a push for private charter schools. The uber-socialist teachers union hates it, so you know it's gotta be good!

The bad - pushing for the space program to go private as to launch vehicles, despite private enterprise not being there yet for manned space flight. Taking the space program in a new direction, but lacking a plan on how to do that.

The face palm - I'm going to quote what's in mind here:

The proposal also seeks $1.1 billion for FAA's NextGen program, a long-term effort to improve the efficiency, safety and capacity of the air traffic control system by moving from ground-based radar surveillance to a more accurate satellite-based surveillance.

WOW!, just WOW! The potential here is just incredible. It could make 9/11 look like a minor fender bender... I guess the president has never heard of the term "ASAT" - a capability quite a few countries enjoy - not all of them friendly to us. But it wouldn't even take a hostile act, as our sat constellations periodically get a bad case of the sun spots when the sun acts up, a phenomenon that disrupts communications, sometimes burns out orbiting electronics and sends shuttle and space station astronauts scurrying for cramped and heavily shielded "bomb shelters in space" so they don't get fried...
