DALLAS — Debra Medina — the third candidate running for the GOP nomination for governor along with Gov. Rick Perry and Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison — is being invited to appear in the statewide televised debate sponsored by Belo TV stations in Texas and The Dallas Morning News.

The debate is set for Friday, January 29.

Until now, Medina had not met the criteria to appear in the debate. However, a new Rasmussen Reports poll released Monday shows a shift among likely Texas GOP voters in her favor. The poll of 831 likely voters found:

* Perry - 43 percent
* Hutchison - 33 percent
* Medina - 12 percent
* Not sure - 11 percent

After reviewing the Rasmussen results, Mike Devlin — president and general manager WFAA-TV in Dallas-Fort Worth, the station that will host the debate — explained why Medina will now be allowed to appear.

"The Rasmussen poll released today shows Debra Medina is now at 12 percent, which is a substantial jump since the previous poll. Factoring in the margin of error (+/- 3.5 percent) and using reasonable news judgment, it appears Ms. Medina is a viable candidate and qualifies for the Belo Debate to be broadcast on January 29," Devlin said.

As previously announced, the primary criteria used to determine which candidates are invited to participate in the debate include whether a candidate:

* receives significant levels of public support in independent public opinion polls, e.g. 15 percent, which is the minimum used by the Commission on Presidential Debates

* has received substantial campaign contributions from varied sources

* has previously held significant public office(s)

* has received a substantial level of votes in prior elections for the same or comparable office(s)

* will be reported by news agencies in election night returns

* has received significant news coverage from a wide range of media outlets

"The FCC and other bodies grant stations the right to exercise good faith news judgment in determining which candidates are invited to participate in televised debates, and to use reasonable news judgment in reaching such decisions, with the intent to neither promote a candidate nor create a disadvantage for a candidate," Devlin's statment said.

Don't forget to show some appreciation to Belo. Send them a thoughtful letter/email and tune into their stations more often. Show them it pays to be inclusive and not pander to the establishment's whims.

I wish we had more time in this primary. 12% is nothing to scoff at. I don't know if she can get elected. But if we can get her pulling 20% or more in a primary, then she will have a great shot at statewide elected office in the future.

Sincerely,

Slutter McGee

LOL at the comments on this article in September
:p

Debra Medina is a traitor. No serious candidate for public office should have been part of last week's Texas Nationalist Movement's secession rally. Rick Perry got only 39% of the vote last time around, but even some of those voters probably aren't so delusional and unpatriotic as to be in support of secession. She wouldn't do as well as he did even among GOP primary voters. I'm not surprised Dr. Paul endorsed her, but that will have zero impact on her candidacy. The fact is that my black lab has as much of a chance of being our next governor as does Debra Medina - and I'm pretty sure my dog isn't even a registered voter.

I hadn't paid too much attention to Medina being she was Texas state election but I just read up on her and was impressed. Texas you elect her governor and we may have to steal her for a presidential candidate in the future!

Ya I was in the same camp a few days ago until after her first debate. I watched it and was very impressed. You should check it out, the whole thing rather than just Medina's answers (it's on youtube), just so you can see how BAD the other two candidates are.. I mean, they are REALLY bad...

But ya, I donated to her the next day and sent e-mails out to get on her on the Belo debate and BAM we got it!! It all happened so fast...

Now, remember the manipulative garbage posted by the AP immediately after the first debate essentially ignoring and marginalizing Debra Medina (no winner, they falsely printed) so her popularity wouldn't rise among voters. These tactics make me want to puke. Thankfully, prospective voters in Texas rallied to support the obvious winner of that debate, Debra Medina. Congratulations, Debra, now seal the coffins of Hutchison and Perry shut! ;)

* Perry - 43 percent
* Hutchison - 33 percent
* Medina - 12 percent
* Not sure - 11 percent

all she has to do is pull another 6 pts from perry 6 pts from hutchison and 6 from the un decided to force a run off vs. perry and kick hutchison out of the race.

this is very very doable.

once in the run off its a whole new game and becomes easyer to win

Wasn't this poll taken before the last debate? I wonder how well shes doing now after that debate.

Friday night and covered by an ABC affiliate. This is going to be a huge draw here in the state of Texas. Debra went from 4% to 12%, after this past PBS covered debate.
With much larger viewership, we could easily see Debra surge well past 20%. And with her first debate past her, you can expect an even more confident and powerful personality tapping into the soul of the Texas character. Come February, you're going to be hearing a lot about Medina and the Texas gubernatorial race from the national political pundits.

Is there any more debates lined up after this 1?There hasn't been anything in the news that I'm aware of. I don't think Perry would miscalculate this badly. If there was one more debate, Debra would have a good chance of overtaking Perry for the top spot in a runoff.

If Medina does really well in this next debate, I have a feeling she will move up and Perry will not want to debate again. Although, I am sure millions more will be tuning into this debate than the last one. She has a real fighting chance! I wish I was in Texas to help out!

Now we need to strategize getting boots on the ground at the debate itself. It doesn't hurt to have a rousing cheer after Medina speaks. This tactic worked very well at GOP presidential debates for Dr Paul. Let's use it for Debra. Where is this debate and what is the process for getting in?

“The Belo Debate: Perry Versus Hutchison,” will originate from WFAA studios in Dallas, ...

I didn't see any info about how to attend as an audience member. You will probably need to contact the station to find out.
